Latifi neemt eerste vrije training in Canada voor zijn rekening bij Williams

Voor het eerst dit seizoen zal een van de vaste Williams-coureurs in Canda zijn zitje af moeten staan tijdens de eerste vrije training. Nicholas Latifi mag in Montreal in een van de FW42's van het team plaatsnemen tijdens VT1.

Latifi brengt het grootste deel van zijn tijd in 2019 door in de Formule 2, waar de Canadees tot op heden erg succesvol is geweest. Hij heeft namens DAMS drie van de eerste zes races gewonnen en staat in het kampioenschap 26 punten los van naaste achtervolger Luca Ghiotto. Daarnaast is Latifi sinds eind 2018 de test- en reservecoureur van Williams.

Het Britse team geeft Latifi dus in de eerste vrije training voor de Grand Prix van Canada de kans om de FW42 verder te testen, nadat hij afgelopen week twee testdagen voor het team afwerkte in Barcelona. Vorig jaar maakte Latifi in Canada zijn debuut in een Grand Prix-weekend, toen hij voor Force India de eerste vrije training mocht rijden. Later dat jaar volgden bij hetzelfde nog vier optredens op de vrijdag.

Tweede testdag leuker voor Latifi dan dag 1

Latifi was tevreden over de testdagen in Barcelona, waarbij hij aantekende dat de tweede dag productiever was dan de eerste. "Dag 2 was vanuit de coureur gezien interessanter dan dag 1. Ik kon een aantal van de zachtere compounds uitproberen. Ik gebruikte de C3, C4 en C5-banden en het is leuk om daarop een beetje de limiet op te zoeken. Ik heb ook een aantal nieuwe onderdelen geprobeerd die op de auto kwamen."

"In de Formule 2 maak je normaal wat balansveranderingen, terwijl je hier hele nieuwe onderdelen op de auto zet. Het was interessant om te zien welke invloed dat had op de auto en hoe ik daarop feedback kon geven. Helaas hadden we een probleem dat ons een of twee runs kostte aan het eind van de ochtend en onze middagsessie wat vertraagde. We waren echter in staat om weer naar buiten te gaan en met veel brandstof te rijden, wat goed is voor mijn ervaring."

Latifi wordt inmiddels al in verband gebracht met het vervangen van Robert Kubica, die dit seizoen tegenvallend presteert bij Williams. Op dit moment richt Latifi zich echter op de Formule 2 en zijn reserverol bij Williams. Na zijn optreden in VT1 in Canada wordt verwacht dat hij nog vijf keer in actie gaat komen tijdens een eerste vrije training.

  Dat zou dan helemaal aan het eind moeten zijn. Hij heeft nu 24 van de 40 SL punten (dacht ik), dus het lijkt slimmer eerst de F2 titel veilig te stellen.

  Misschien toch Sirotkin dan gedurende dit jaar, wat ik niet eens verkeerd zou vinden. IJverige gozer die geen duels schuwt. Brengt wellicht geld mee en is niet langzamer dan Kubica.

  Het zou vroeg zijn om Kubica nu al te vervangen, anderzijds kan je niet ontkennen dat het interessant zou zijn om iemand anders te meten met Russel, denk dat Russel mss wel eens enorm goed zou kunnen zijn, zijn generatie genoten die mee overstapten doen het alles behalve slecht me dunkt.

  Heeft Latifi al genoeg licentiepunten? Ik denk niet dat ze Sirotkin laten instappen als ze toch al weten dat Latifi het stoeltje volgend jaar overneemt. Het zal er ook aan liggen waar Russel volgend jaar heen gaat eventueel. Bij Racing Point lijkt geen plaats, maar misschien weet Mercedes hem elders te stallen?

Jammer dat deze gast nu een stapje terug moet nemen uit de F2 door in een Williams te moeten rijden. Waar heeft ie dit aan verdient?

Dit is dus haast zeker einde oefening voor Robert kubica. Iedereen zei het van tevoren dat dit niet zou werken, maar Williams heeft niet voor zijn " talent" gekozen maar voor Robert's duiten. Het grote probleem bij Williams is CLAIRE. Die moet eruit getikt worden en dit Frank moet het weer over gaan nemen. Onder zijn hoede gebeurden er mooie dingen. Mja, Williams is op sterven na dood. Jammer voor zo'n mooi team.
