Sao Paulo doet verwoede pogingen Grand Prix op Interlagos te behouden

De gemeenteraad van Sao Paulo heeft haar steun laten zien aan de organisatie van de Grand Prix van Brazilië op Interlagos. Op die manier hoopt de gemeente dat het evenement op de huidige locatie blijft.

Recent verklaarde de Braziliaanse president Jair Bolsonaro dat de Grand Prix van Brazilië met ingang van 2020 op een nog aan te leggen circuit in Rio de Janeiro gehouden wordt. Die aankondiging zorgde voor gefronste wenkbrauwen, omdat die bekendmaking rijkelijk laat kwam voor een race op een circuit dat nog niet bestaat. Chase Carey, de CEO van de Formule 1, waardeerde de interesse van Rio, maar bevestigde dat Interlagos gewoon een contract heeft voor de Grand Prix van 2020.

"We hebben een contract met onze huidige promotor tot en met de race van 2020. Brazilië in het algemeen en Rio in het bijzonder zijn bijzonder attractief voor ons als racelocatie en we zijn gevleid door de interesse", vertelde Carey daarover.

Interlagos al sinds 1990 locatie Braziliaanse GP

Interlagos is al sinds 1990 de vaste thuishaven van de Braziliaanse Grand Prix, maar het voortbestaan van de race is nog onzeker. Deze week koos het stadsbestuur ervoor om de verkoop van het circuit aan een private partij niet te steunen. Was dat wel gedaan, dan was de toekomst nog onduidelijker geworden voor Interlagos.

Burgemeester Bruno Covas van Sao Paulo moet zich nog buigen over het besluit, maar de verwachting is dat hij de motie goed zal keuren. Dat betekent mogelijk een doorbraak voor Sao Paulo en het circuit om ook in de komende jaren de thuisbasis van de Braziliaanse Grand Prix te blijven. De stad doet nu een poging om een ontmoeting met Bolsonaro en Marcelo Alvaro, de minister van toerisme, te regelen.

ik vind Zandvoort ook wel wat weg hebben van Interlagos, de bebouwing rondom het circuit lijkt veel op die favela's

Prachtig circuit waar we bloedstollende races hebben gezien. Vaak zelfs races die tot het laatste moment om de titel gingen.
Maar nee joh, laten we ook dat gewoon van de kalender halen. Steeds meer saaie circuits erbij en historische leuke circuits eraf. Laten we vooral de F1 verder om zeep helpen.

Lijkt vooral een poging van Bolsonaro om de F1 voor zijn karretje te spannen. En voorlopig gaan zowel de Fia als Sao Paulo daar nog niet in mee.

Het oude lange circuit van interlagos was gaver, maar ook de reden dat het pas in aangepaste vorm in 1990 pas weer terugkeerde.

Ik vind Interlagos een mooie baan waar we een paar memorabele GP's hebben gehad. Dus ik hoop dat ze de GP kunnen behouden. De meeste nieuwe banen voegen niets toe, dus het is m.i. ook nog eens erg belangrijk om daar te blijven om de sport niet te laten verminderen in attractiviteit.
