Sergio Sette Camara: "Rijden met een Formule 1-auto is een bonus"

Na het maken van zijn testdebuut voor McLaren, afgelopen woensdag in Barcelona, zegt McLaren-junior Sergio Sette Camara dat zijn tijd in de MCL34 een 'bonus' is waarvan hij hoopt te kunnen profiteren. De Braziliaan is actief in het Formule 2-kampioenschap bij DAMS en tekende eind 2018 voor McLaren als hun test- en ontwikkelingscoureur.

Camara voor het eerst in de MCL34

Camara verving Oliver Turvey voor de middagsessie op het Circuit de Catalunya, maar betrouwbaarheidsproblemen zorgden ervoor dat hij slechts negentien ronden in de MCL34 kon doorbrengen. Ondanks het feit dat de test niet zo succesvol was als hij had gehoopt vertelde Camara dat hij elke kans zal aanpakken.

"Ik word altijd beoordeeld", vertelde de Braziliaan. "Ik denk dat ik word beoordeeld zal worden op mijn huidige Formule 2-seizoen. Dat verloopt tot op dit moment nog niet zo goed, dus daar ligt mijn focus."

De DAMS-coureur ziet de Formule 1-test als een bonus: "Ik zie elke interactie met de Formule 1 als een bonus. Ik probeer gewoon het beste te doen wat ik kan. In de test zijn teams altijd op zoek naar consistentie en volwassen coureurs die 100 procent hun werk doen. Er zijn niet veel coureurs die zo'n productieve test doen omdat een aantal van hen raceprogramma's hebben die niet bij de Formule 1 passen."

Rol als testcoureur

"Het is goed om een van die coureurs te zijn voor het geval ik in de toekomst niet veel mogelijkheden heb. Ik zal uitermate geschikt zijn voor zo'n rol, dus het is altijd goed om deze ervaring op te nemen."

Sette Camara voegde eraan toe dat het besturen van een moderne Formule 1-auto een leerzaam proces was. De Braziliaan hoopt in de toekomst weer in de auto te stappen: "Rijden met een McLaren Formule 1-auto was een geweldige ervaring voor mij. Ik was in staat op nieuwe procedures te leren, te zien hoe de auto aanvoelde en ik heb een paar snelle ronden kunnen rijden. Het is jammer dat we de dag hebben moeten inkorten, maar ik heb van mijn kant heel veel geleerd en ik ben blij dat ik de kans heb gehad om deze auto te besturen."

"Ik dank iedereen bij McLaren voor deze ervaring en ik hoop dat ik het in de toekomst nog eens kan herhalen", vertelde hij.
