Sauber gaf Raikkonen schuilnaam 'Eskimo' tijdens eerste F1-test in 2000

Kimi Raikkonen viert komend weekend een bijzonder jubileum. De Grand Prix van Monaco wordt de 298ste start van zijn Formule 1-carrière, maar het is wel het 300ste Grand Prix-weekend waarvoor hij ingeschreven is.

Raikkonen maakte in 2001 zijn debuut in de Formule 1 voor Sauber. Hij kreeg destijds een voorwaardelijke superlicentie, omdat de FIA door zijn geringe autosportervaring twijfelde aan zijn kunnen. Sauber twijfelde daar niet aan, nadat de Fin in 2000 zijn eerste Formule 1-test had afgewerkt voor de Zwitserse renstal. Voor Formula1.com bespraken Willy Rampf, Peter Sauber en hoofd-ontwerper Sergio Rinland die eerste testdag.

Sauber komt met bijnaam 'Eskimo'

Teambaas Sauber was al overtuigd van de kunnen van Raikkonen en wilde hem in 2000 graag een test laten uitvoeren in de Sauber-bolide van dat seizoen. De Zwitser vreesde echter dat de concurrentie ook achter het talent aan zouden gaan, dus volgens Rampf bedacht hij een list. "Binnen het team wisten we dat hij speciaal was. We moesten met een naam komen om zijn identiteit geheim te houden. We konden niet zeggen dat hij Kimi Raikkonen was toen we naar dingen refereerden, dus we noemden hem 'Eskimo'."

"Peter noemde Kimi de 'Eskimo'", springt Rinland daarop in. "Hij noemde hem niet Iceman, dat kwam later. Waarom heette hij Eskimo? De sponsor die de test betaalde was een ijsjesmaker uit Scandinavië. Na de test riep Peter ons bij elkaar en daar vertelde hij dat hij Eskimo een stoeltje ging aanbieden. Wij barstten toen in lachen uit."

Sauber was dus overtuigd van Raikkonen's kunnen, maar zijn snelheid was niet dat wat de meeste indruk op hem maakte. "Het is niet makkelijk om de indruk die Kimi op mij maakte te beschrijven. Zijn snelheid maakte niet zozeer indruk op mij, hoewel zijn snelheid goed was. Het was vooral zijn lichaamstaal die een sterke wil en vastberadenheid liet zien en dat maakte een diepe indruk op mij."

  dat zou niet zo sympathiek van Kimi zijn ;)
  Bovendien was het geen 'rotzooi teampje' toen, maar een heel mooi team om te debuteren, hadden goede sponsors, een wagen die goed was voor de punten....
  Seizoen 2001 eindigde Sauber nog P4 bij de constructeurs

  Sauber was toenterijd zo'n beetje de Force India of McLaren van nu, grote sponsoren als Petronas en Red Bull waren toen onderdeel van Sauber voordat zij zelf een team startten en/of naar grotere teams gingen.
  Ze hadden een goede auto, goede coureurs, goed budget, goede motor, goed management. Absoluut geen 'Ferrari B'.

  De constructie waar Haas nu gebruik van maakt voor onderdelen is toen bedacht om te voorkomen dat er auto’s gekopieerd worden zoals de Ferrari van toen, die regels gingen echt in toen Toro Rosso een jaar oude redbull inschreef
