Verstappen staat meer op eigen benen: "Maar ik hou Jos van alles op de hoogte"

Max Verstappen begint als Formule 1-coureur steeds meer op eigen benen te staan, maar dat betekent niet dat vader Jos niet meer betrokken is. De Red Bull Racing-coureurs stelt dat hij zijn vader nog alles vertelt tijdens een Grand Prix-weekend.

Verstappen debuteerde in 2015 in de Formule 1 en in de eerste jaren waren hij en vader Jos vrijwel onafscheidelijk. Verstappen senior was bij vrijwel alle races aanwezig, iets was junior op dat moment goed kon waarderen. Inmiddels is Max met zijn 21-jarige leeftijd een volwassen man en dat houdt ook in dat hij de zaken inmiddels zelf iets meer onder controle heeft.

'Was goed om Jos met zijn ervaring om mij heen te hebben'

Voor Jos betekent dit dat hij niet meer bij iedere race aanwezig hoeft te zijn om ervaringen uit zijn eigen carrière met Max te delen. Dat vertelde Verstappen aan F1 Racing. “Hij was de eerste paar jaar in de Formule 1 nog heel erg betrokken bij mijn racecarrière. Ik denk dat dat ook normaal is. Ik was nog erg jong en het was goed om hem met zijn ervaring om me heen te hebben. Dat gaf me veel vertrouwen."

"De laatste tijd komt hij natuurlijk minder bij races. Ik denk dat hij er nog maar de helft van de tijd bij is. Maar ik houd hem nog steeds op de hoogte van alles. Elke ochtend en avond tijdens een raceweekend stuur ik hem een berichtje. Dan vertel ik bijvoorbeeld over wat we precies gaan doen met de afstelling. Hij kan dan zijn mening geven, maar hij wil ook gewoon graag op de hoogte blijven als hij thuis zit. Dat begrijp ik wel."

Als je vroegah iemand slechts een duwtje gaf als diegene je een oor had aangenaaid was je een watje, en werd je uitgelachen omdat je dat zomaar pikte. Tegenwoordig krijg je daar een taakstraf voor, wat ik dan weer lachwekkend vind.

Daarna ff broodje eten en in vt2 proberen we de nieuwe voorvleugel met dezelfde afstelling als vt1”

Jos is in coaching alleen nog goed om teleurstellingen van Max in goede banen te leiden.
Jos heeft er daar veel van gehad in zijn actieve F1 loopbaan.
Maar ook daarin heeft Jos weinig meer te doen, al had hij in Brazilië wel iets mogen vertellen over opvliegendheid.

  Dat stelde natuurlijk allemaal niet zo veel voor natuurlijk, maar het had een Hamilton of Vettel moeten wezen die zo reageerde, dan waren de reacties heeel anders geweest...

  Als Ocon na de race voor herstelwerkzaamheden bij dokter Plooij in de stoel was komen te zitten in Brazilië voor diverse tandheelkundige reparaties had ouderwets terecht geweest.
