Ferrari treedt in 2019 definitief toe tot Esports-kampioenschap Formule 1

Het officiële Esports-kampioenschap van de Formule 1 zal in 2019 eindelijk tien deelnemende teams hebben. Als laatste team kiest ook Ferrari ervoor om zich in een avontuur in de Esports te storten.

Het Esports-kampioenschap van de Formule 1 begint in 2019 aan haar derde seizoen, waarbij vooral de vorige jaargang al echt op een kampioenschap begon te lijken. In drie live-evenementen werden tien races gereden en uiteindelijk werden Brendon Leigh en Mercedes gekroond tot kampioenen. Leigh was ook in het eerste seizoen van de F1 Esports Series de sterkste.

Vrijwel alle teams deden mee aan het tweede seizoen van de F1 Esports Series. Mercedes, Red Bull Racing, Renault, Haas F1, McLaren, Racing Point, Alfa Romeo, Toro Rosso en Williams zetten allemaal een serieus Esports-programma op, maar Ferrari bleef achter. De Scuderia zag er geen heil in om deel te nemen aan het initiatief, net zoals het team er geen brood in zag om deel te nemen aan de Netflix-serie Drive to Survive.

Na Netflix-serie ook deelname aan Esports

Recent lijkt er een verandering te ontstaan in de cultuur bij Ferrari. Het team gaat meedoen aan het tweede seizoen van Drive to Survive en nu volgt dus ook deelname aan het derde seizoen van de F1 Esports Series. Dat kondigde het team aan op de website van de Ferrari Driver Academy. Zodoende zullen alle teams dus aan de start staan van het komende seizoen.

De betrokkenheid van Ferrari in de Esports zal niet beperkt blijven tot alleen het kampioenschap van de Formule 1. Er zal een apart gedeelte van de Driver Academy ingericht worden om Esporters aan te trekken en op te leiden. Het Ferrari Driver Academy esports Team zal gaan deelnemen aan Esports-kampioenschappen in zowel single seaters als in bijvoorbeeld GT- of endurance-kampioenschappen.
