Sainz opent ook in Canada sterk: "Geloof niet dat we echt op P4 zullen staan"

Na een goed optreden in Monaco zette Carlos Sainz zijn goede vorm door op de vrijdag in Canada. De McLaren-coureur reed de vierde tijd, maar toch denk hij niet dat dit een realistische afspiegeling is van de verhoudingen.

Sainz gaf in de tweede vrije training weinig tijd toe op snelste man Charles Leclerc. Aan het einde van de sessie was het gat slechts een kleine vier tienden van een seconde. Dat was goed genoeg voor de Spanjaard om op de vierde positie uit te komen. Sainz voelde zich op zijn gemak in de MCL34, maar hij denkt dat hij op zaterdag en zondag genoegen zal moeten nemen met een plek achter de drie topteams.

Goed gevoel over korte en lange runs

"Ik ben natuurlijk redelijk blij met deze dag. We hadden mogelijk een van de beste vrijdagen van dit seizoen, maar ik geloof niet echt dat wij ook echt vierde zijn. We liggen absoluut achter de drie topteams. Ik geloof dat ik me op mijn gemak voelde in de auto, maar zaterdag keren we waarschijnlijk terug naar de realiteit."

Het goede gevoel van Sainz op de korte runs kwam tot uiting in de sterke rondetijd, maar ook tijdens de lange runs voelde hij zich op zijn gemak in de McLaren. “Ik heb nog geen kans gehad om te kijken naar de long run, maar ik voelde me net zo goed als op de korte runs. Dat is goed nieuws. Ik denk echter wel dat morgen iets anders zal verlopen dan vandaag.”

Sainz blij met 'experimenterend' McLaren

McLaren is een van de teams die op het Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve een upgrade meegenomen hebben. Zo heeft het Britse team onder andere een aangepaste vloer en nieuwe spiegels meegenomen naar Montreal. Volgens Sainz heeft McLaren een aantal experimentele dingen uitgeprobeerd in de vrije trainingen en daar is hij blij mee, omdat het de motivatie van het team laat zien om naar voren te komen.

"Ja, alle onderdelen werken zoals ze moeten werken. We hebben vandaag ook wat experimentele dingen geprobeerd op de auto, waarbij we veel dingen tijdens de sessies veranderd hebben om de optimale balans te vinden. We hebben veel te analyseren om te zien wat er werkte en wat niet werkte. Ik ben blij dat het team dingen uitprobeert, want dat laat zien dat we graag vooruit willen. Dat is wat ik graag wil zien."

Met Lewis en Max die een "issue" met de kampioenenmuur hadden is P4 straks niet heel realistisch, dat heeft Sainz wel goed....

  Schuif je een plaats op Carlos, het is toch Max die meestal plaats vier bezet aan het einde van de race, om een trauma van op te lopen!

  @Bruce , dat lijkt me inderdaad frustrerend, altijd 4de worden. Voor een McLaren rijder op dit moment zou #5 eindigen geen frustratie opleveren

  @schwantz34 Ik denk dat Renault best wel blij is dat McLaren het goed doet. Nu kan Renault zien dat hun chassis niet best is maar hun motor best goed presteert. Goede benchmark dus.

Realistische analyse van Sainz.
Ondanks dat, ziet McLaren er ook op dit (power) circuit weer prima uit.
Nog beter nieuws; de Long runs waren ook veruit de snelste van het middenveld en zaten dichter bij de top 3, dan bij het middenveld.
Goed bezig McLaren, nu volhouden!

  McLaren doet het beter met Renault als wat ze gedaan hebben met Honda. Dus McLaren als team is beter op zijn plek. En dat zie je. Team werkt beter, met meer enthousiasme en de rijders helpen daar aan mee. Het is en blijft een team en als team kan je verder naar voren komen
