Drie plaatsen gridstraf voor Sainz voor ophouden Albon in Q1

Carlos Sainz is tijdens de kwalificatie tegen een gridstraf aangelopen. De McLaren-coureur moet drie plaatsen achteruit op de grid, omdat hij Alexander Albon opgehouden heeft tijdens het eerste deel van de kwalificatie.

Sainz was het hele weekend in Canada al prima onderweg, nadat hij in Monaco ook een sterke indruk maakte. De Spanjaard reed in de tweede vrije training nog de vierde tijd en wist het in de kwalificatie ook te schoppen tot het derde deel. Daarin had hij echter geen goede ronde, want hij eindigde op 3,7 seconden van polesitter Sebastian Vettel op de negende positie. Daarmee moest hij teamgenoot Lando Norris voor zich dulden.

In het eerste kwalificatiedeel maakte Sainz zich volgens de stewards echter schuldig aan het ophouden van Albon. Beide coureurs wisten zich uiteindelijk te plaatsen voor Q2, maar dat is voor de stewards geen reden om geen straf uit te delen. Sainz moet, in lijn met eerdere beslissingen in dergelijke gevallen, drie plaatsen achteruit op de grid en zal de race dus vanaf de twaalfde positie aan moeten vangen.

Voor Max Verstappen is de gridstraf van Sainz goed nieuws. De Red Bull-coureur kwalificeerde zich slechts als elfde, maar zal dus door de straf van Sainz in ieder geval vanaf P10 mogen beginnen. Vermoedelijk wordt dat P9, omdat Kevin Magnussen veel schade opliep bij zijn crash en mogelijk vanuit de pitstraat moet vertrekken.

Ook Leclerc moet naar stewards

Sainz is niet de enige coureur die zich na de kwalificatie moet melden bij de stewards. Ook Charles Leclerc moet zich bij de wedstrijdleiding melden om tekst en uitleg te geven. De Ferrari-coureur ging in Q1 in bocht 8 van de baan, maar kwam na bocht 9 niet langs de goede kant van het paaltje terug op de baan.

  Wit starten is misschien geen gek idee. Dan is t hopen op een safety car nadat iedereen al binnen is geweest. Kleine kans, maar als je hetzelfde doet als de rest ga je sowieso achter Ferrari en Mercedes eindigen.

  Dan moeten de teams of de soft het wel 10 ronden volhouden Rimmer. Dus zal waarschijnlijk nog eerder zijn. De eerste ronden zullen echter wel lastig worden op de harde witte band dus dan vooral heel houden en verdedigen.

Ik ben er vrij zeker van dat Leclerc geen straf gaat krijgen. Even buiten beschouwng gelaten of dit nu terecht is of niet.

  Omdat de FIA heeft aangegeven dat ze strenger zullen zijn tijdens kwalificatie en race. En anders maken ze zichzelf weer belachelijk:
  "The competitors are reminded, that during Qualifying Practice and the Race the Race Director’s notes will be enforced in a stricter manner. "

  Precies wat @laagvliegerT zegt. De wedstrijdleiding gaf aan dat "die anderen" er vanaf kwamen omdat het vrije training was. Daarmee zeggen ze dus indirect dat die wel een straf hadden gekregen als ze hetzelfde in de kwalificatie hadden gedaan. Dat zou bij deze dus ook een straf voor Leclerc moeten betekenen.
  
  Zelf zou ik een straf overigens niet terecht vinden, alleen denk ik dat een niet Ferrari / Mercedes coureur wel bestraft zou worden. We hebben 2 weken terug al gezien waar Bottas mee wegkwam en dit is geen incident, maar een patroon wat zeker de afgelopen jaren overduidelijk zichtbaar is.

Ik denk dat verstappen op geel start en nog redelijk hoog gaat eindigen ook in de race. Of het op het podium is, is afwachten, maar het zou mij niet verbazen.

  Zou altijd starten op wit en dan kijken hoe lang je door kan. Met veel mazzel kan je dan nog naar rood in de laatste stint voor een mooi slotoffensief en een punt voor de snelste ronde.
