Giovinazzi volgt Bottas op als winnaar Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini

Hoewel hij het afgelopen jaar vanaf de zijlijn toekeek, heeft Antonio Giovinazzi toch een prestigieuze prijs gekregen voor zijn werkzaamheden. De Italiaan ontvangt de Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini, waarmee hij de opvolger is van Valtteri Bottas.

De Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt voor een bijzondere prestatie in de autosport. Meestal zijn de coureurs de ontvanger van de trofee, maar in 2015 won Mercedes de prijs als eerste als geheel team. In 2018 won Bottas de trofee voor zijn sterke seizoen in 2017, wat zijn definitieve doorbraak in de Formule 1 betekende.

In 2019 gaat de prijs naar Antonio Giovinazzi. Hij zal zaterdag in een bolide van Alfa Romeo van Faenza naar Brisighella rijden om daar de trofee in ontvangst te nemen. Tegelijkertijd zullen ook een aantal andere leden van het team een prijs in ontvangst mogen nemen. Xevi Pujolar, Simone Resta en Jan Monchaux worden gezien als drijvende krachten achter de wederopstanding van Alfa Romeo, dat vorig jaar nog door het leven ging als Sauber.

Giovinazzi treedt met de winst van de Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini in de voetsporen van een lange reeks kampioenen. Onder anderen Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, Jacques Villeneuve, Jenson Button en Nico Rosberg waren in het verleden al eens winnaar van de prestigieuze prijs.

  Hij is heel constant in het aantal punten dat hij scoort in de Formule 1. Vorig jaar deed hij niet eens mee, maar zelfs dat had geen invloed op zijn resultaat.

  Capelli in 92 was een logische keuze. Eerste winnaar en om deze een Italiaan te laten zijn die op dat moment in de Formule 1 in een Ferrari zat, is logisch.
  Wurz gold in 1997/1998 als hét grote talent. Zijn invalbeurt voor Berger in 1997 liet zijn ster rijzen. Tel daar zijn Le Mans avontuur bij op en het is mij wel logisch waarom hij in 1999 deze prijs kreeg.

Deze prijs heeft haar glans verloren na 2011. Door Senna uit te roepen als winnaar destijds, kreeg de organisatie het hele journaille van de racewereld al over zich heen. Om daarna een Ferrari telg te kiezen was ook niet het sterkste staaltje werk. Maar om vervolgens teams ook te vernoemen als winnaars, zorgde er voor dat deze prijs echt al haar betekenis kwijt is geraakt. En dan het Alfa feestje van dit jaar.. Bespottelijk.

Als Max van tevoren had geweten wie zijn opvolgers zouden worden , dan had hij toen die trofee waarschijnlijk niet aangenomen.

Bij Bottas was het al redelijk twijfelachtig door maar 3 overwinningen te behalen met een dominante auto in 2017. Zijn teamgenoot behaalde dat seizoen 9 overwinningen.

Maar wat heeft Giovinazzi nou laten zien in 2018? Sorry, maar het is lastiger om een coureur te vinden minder aanspraak maakt op de trofee. Door hem nu aan Giovinazzi te geven is de trofee eigenlijk niks meer waard.
