Russell genoot van pittig gevecht met teamgenoot Kubica

George Russell streed tijdens de Grand Prix van Frankrijk in een mooi gevecht met teamgenoot Robert Kubica. De Williams-coureur is blij dat het team geen teamorders doorvoerde tijdens de race op Paul Ricard.

Russell is dit seizoen duidelijk de sterkere van de Williams-coureurs geweest en dat was op Paul Ricard eigenlijk niet anders. Hij moest door een gridstraf wel achter Kubica starten en uiteindelijk zou hij daar ook finishen, doordat hij een extra pitstop moest maken. De Brit vertelde het team aan het begin van de race al dat hij sneller was, maar toch was hij blij dat er geen teamorders uitgevaardigd werden.

"Ik vertelde het team dat ik het gevoel had dat ik sneller was, maar ik verwachtte geen verandering. Ik wilde het eerlijk en op de baan doen. Bij de eerste poging ging ik wijd en beschadigde ik mijn voorvleugel. De tweede poging lukte wel en het was een behoorlijk gewaagde actie, maar het was het hoogtepunt van mijn race", vertelde Russell na de race.

Russell had begrip gehad voor ingrijpen team

Russell maakte na de race ook duidelijk hij het wel begrepen had als Williams had ingegrepen in het duel, omdat schade uiteindelijk het gevolg was. "Achteraf gezien wel, want ik beschadigde mijn voorvleugel. Ik wilde hem echter niet inhalen doordat hij naar binnen geroepen werd, maar op de baan. Het team geeft ons gelijke kansen en zo hoort het te zijn.

Schade aan bolide merkte Russell niet

Na het duel met Kubica werd Russell dus naar de pits geroepen voor een nieuwe voorvleugel, maar hij had eigenlijk niet door dat zijn bolide schade had. "Ik voelde geen verschil, maar het team zag wat problemen. Ik denk dat er misschien een klein scheurtje was, omdat ik het piepschuimen bord raakte. Als we om punten hadden gestreden, was ik niet naar binnen geroepen, maar er was geen noodzaak om een gok te wagen."

  Ik zag Kubica toch weer de sterkste start nemen en op het scherpst van de snee racen tegen Russell. Vreemd dat, omdat het nog niet goed loopt in de raceprocessie van brandstof en banden sparen, dat we zeggen dat hij het racen verleerd is.

Doordat ze met elkaar streden hadden de camera's nog wat belangstelling voor hen.
Dat was leuk om te zien en daar komen de F1-fans voor.
Anders had niemand geweten dat ze er ook gereden hebben.

  En dat is eigenlijk jammer. Gisteren in een andere post werd gewezen op het talent van Russell. Dat is echter amper zichtbaar in de Williams. Ben benieuwd of zijn talent opgepikt gaat worden door andere teams.
