George Russell steekt de draak: "Ik denk dat we Q3 nog niet kunnen halen, zet ons maar in Q2!"

George Russell zegt dat het team van Williams nog minimaal vijf tot zes races nodig heeft om 'merkbare' progressie te boeken. Williams heeft gedurende het seizoen 2019 nog geen punt gescoord en heeft sinds de invoering van haar FW42 mondjesmaat verbeteringen kunnen toepassen op hun 2019-model. De coureurs, Robert Kubica en George Russell, zijn samen met Antonio Giovinazzi de enige coureurs die nog puntloos zijn in 2019.

Russell gelooft dat Williams de goede weg is ingeslagen. Toch geeft hij toe dat het team waarschijnlijk de rest van het jaar achteraan zal blijven rijden, zelfs als er grote vooruitgang wordt geboekt: "Iedereen is positief, wat echt indrukwekkend is om te zien in deze moeilijke tijden", vertelde de Brit.

"We zullen nog een aantal races in deze positie zitten. Ik denk dat we pas na vijf a zes races een beetje vooruitgang kunnen boeken. Die vooruitgang zal dan pas merkbaar zijn, maar we zullen nog steeds achteraan zitten", zei hij realistisch.

"Het begin van het seizoen heeft ons echt op de achtergrond gezet en we moeter er het beste van maken. We zullen keihard moeten werken om betere resultaten te boeken aan het einde van het seizoen."

Russell zei dat Williams niet anticipeert op een 'grote-update' bij een van de komende races, maar dat het team haar focus heeft op kleinere prestatie-updates. "We brengen niet echt grote updates mee, maar alleen wat ditjes en datjes gedurende het seizoen. We hebben een kleine update voor Silverstone en een kleine update voor Duitsland. Zo zal het eigenlijk de rest van het seizoen gaan."

"Deze updates zullen ons niet in Q3 gaan brengen, maar misschien wel in Q2. Ik weet dat mensen hier om zullen lachen als ik dat zeg, maar jullie moeten wel rekening houden met mijn gevoel voor humor", grapte de Formule 2-kampioen.

Ik zou het persoonlijk heel knap vinden als KUB of RUS punten scoren dit seizoen. Ik zie dat alleen gebeuren in een knotsgekke race eerlijk gezegd, maar dit seizoen zijn de races nog niet knotsgek geweest.

  Als alle 18 andere autos utvallen kunnen ze nog niet de race winnen. Tijdlimiet per Gp staat op een uur of twee geloof ik. Dat redden ze niet.
