Norris genoot van duels met Hamilton en Verstappen in openingsfase GP Oostenrijk

Lando Norris werd knap zesde tijdens de Oostenrijkse Grand Prix, waarbij hij vooral genoot van de openingsfase van de race. Toen kon hij zich korte tijd mengen in duels met Lewis Hamilton en Max Verstappen.

Norris startte de race op de Red Bull Ring vanaf positie 5 en profiteerde van de slechte start van Verstappen. Vervolgens kon de McLaren-coureur in de eerste ronde een aanval doen op Hamilton, maar de vijfvoudig wereldkampioen counterde meteen. Norris kon het gevecht op dat moment aangaan met zijn landgenoot, omdat de Mercedes-coureur volgens hem 'meer te verliezen had'.

Hamilton 'had meer te verliezen' in duel met Norris

"Ik denk dat de eerste ronde het beste stukje was. Als team zijn we goed geweest met de starts, maar ik heb een aantal foutjes gemaakt. Op Paul Ricard deed ik het aardig, maar nog niet goed genoeg, maar dit weekend had ik een goede start. In de eerste bocht twijfelde ik of ik de uitloopstrook moest gebruiken, maar ik vertrouwde erop dat Lewis niets raars zou doen."

"Door zijn situatie kon ik meer risico's nemen dan hij, dus ik moest richting bocht 1 langs de buitenkant, wat niet makkelijk was. Het was jammer dat ik Lewis niet voor kon blijven, want hij was te snel op de rechte stukken. Dat was een beetje frustrerend. Buiten dat denk ik dat we het beter gedaan hebben tijdens de openingsronde en dat was prettig."

Norris wil met McLaren terug naar de top

Daarna volgde voor Norris een gevecht met Verstappen, die zich weer een weg naar voren wilde banen en daarvoor eerst langs Norris moest komen. Het kostte de Nederlander de nodige moeite om voorbij te komen aan de McLaren, wat voor de Brit eigenlijk als een verrassing kwam gezien het enorme verschil in snelheid tussen de twee teams.

"Max had aanvankelijk moeite om mij te passeren, maar uiteindelijk heeft hij gewonnen. Daaraan kon je zien dat het snelheidsverschil groot was. In de openingsfase was het echter niet makkelijk om mij te passeren. Het was goed om tegen ze te racen, want je kan zien waar ze tijd winnen en waar wij niet ver bij ze vandaan zitten. We konden maar kort vechten met de jongens die sneller dan wij zijn, maar daar willen wij uiteindelijk ook terechtkomen. Als we hard blijven werken, zullen we ze op een dag van ons afhouden."

Dat hij op de rode band reed, heeft natuurlijk ook geholpen voor een kort gevecht. Het was voor die jonge topper een goede leerschool;)

  Dat neemt niet weg dat Norris voor het eerst heeft getoond dit jaar dat hij ballen heeft. Vergelijk maar met Gasly. Die kon daar helemaal niets op rood. Dit was gewoon goed van Norris. Hij straalt plezier uit met wat hij doet en hij toont grote ambitie. Prachtig.

Ik hoop op een toekomst met vele duels tussen competitieve wagens en coureurs en voorzie dat het mannen als Norris, Russel, Verstappen, LeClerc en misschien Sainz en Ocon zijn die de dienst gaan uitmaken

Altijd zelf kritisch, dat siert hem en laat zien dat hij uit het goede hout gesneden is.
Die actie buitenom bij Hamilton liet zien dat deze jongen veel race talent en potentie heeft.
