Ericsson mist racen in F1 niet: "Volgen een miljoen keer makkelijker dan in F1"

Marcus Ericsson keerde deze week weer even terug in de Formule 1 tijdens een bandentest die Alfa Romeo afwerkte voor Pirelli. De IndyCar-coureur mist het race in Europa niet echt.

In 2014 debuteerde Ericsson in de Formule 1 bij achterhoedeteam Caterham. Daarna volgde een dienstverband van vier seizoenen bij Alfa Romeo-voorloper Sauber, maar aan het eind van 2018 werd hij door de benoeming van Antonio Giovinazzi en Kimi Raikkonen gedegradeerd tot test- en reservecoureur. Om wel aan zijn racekilometers te komen, rijdt Ericsson fulltime in de IndyCar Series.

Veel werkzaamheden op de baan had Ericsson nog niet gedaan voor Alfa Romeo dit jaar, maar na de Oostenrijkse Grand Prix maakte hij zijn eerste meters van 2019 voor het team. Dat deed hij tijdens een test van Pirelli voor de banden van 2020. De Zweed legde daarbij ruim 116 ronden af.

Ericsson geniet meer van racen in IndyCars

Ericsson lijkt het echter goed naar zijn zin te hebben in Amerika. Hij staat onder contract bij Schmidt Peterson Motorsports en stelt dat het leuker is om in de IndyCar te racen dan in de Formule 1. "Dit zijn de echte races. Het rijden achter een andere auto is een miljoen keer makkelijker dan in de Formule 1. Alleen als je in vrije lucht rijdt, mis je de prestaties van een F1-auto. Ze hebben veel meer vermogen en downforce", vertelde hij aan Auto, Motor und Sport

Ericsson staat na tien races op een vijftiende positie in het kampioenschap. De coureur van SPM behaalde recent in Detroit zijn beste resultaat door de tweede positie binnen te halen.
