Ericsson: "Prioriteit is IndyCar-contract tekenen voor 2020"

Keert Marcus Ericsson ooit nog terug naar de Formule 1? De Zweed lijkt zich momenteel vooral te richten op een plekje in de IndyCars voor 2020, in plaats van op een terugkeer in de Formule 1.

Aan het eind van 2018 kwam er een (voorlopig) einde aan het Formule 1-avontuur van Ericsson, die toch vijf hele seizoenen gereden heeft in de koningsklasse van de autosport: eentje bij Caterham, daarna vier jaar bij Sauber. Dit jaar moest hij bij Alfa Romeo zijn plek afstaan aan Kimi Raikkonen en Antonio Giovinazzi, maar hij is nog altijd reservecoureur van het team. Ook rijdt hij voor Schmidt Peterson Motorsports in de IndyCar Series.

Een nieuwe deal tekenen voor die klasse is nu het hoofddoel van Ericsson voor 2020. "Op het moment zie ik mezelf doorgaan in de Verenigde Staten. Ik heb het naar mijn zin en ik begin de fijne kneepjes van het rijden in de IndyCar te begrijpen. Ik zou graag willen blijven en willen zien wat ik kan doen met meer ervaring. Ik hoop dus om een contract te kunnen tekenen voor 2020. Daarna sluit ik de deur natuurlijk nooit."

'In IndyCar gevoel dat ik om prijzen mee kan doen'

Ericsson heeft het gevoel dat hij in de IndyCar iedere wedstrijd meedoet om de knikkers, iets wat in de Formule 1 zeker niet het geval was. "Bij iedere race weet ik dat ik een kans heb om van voren te strijden. Het is natuurlijk lastig omdat er zat goede coureurs zijn, maar ik heb in ieder geval nooit het gevoel dat er geen kans is. Toen ik in de Formule 1 zat, denk ik niet dat ik dat gevoel meer dan eens gehad heb."
