Silverstone schrapt derde DRS-zone door bochten 1 en 2

De controversiële derde DRS-zone op Silverstone is geschrapt. Vorig jaar konden de coureurs hun achtervleugel tussen de laatste bocht en bocht 3 openklappen, in 2019 is dat niet meer het geval.

Jarenlang konden de coureurs op Silverstone slechts twee keer gebruik maken van DRS: dat deden ze op Wellington Straight en Hangar Straight. Voor de editie van 2018 besloot de FIA echter een derde zone in te stellen. Deze begon op het rechte stuk van start-finish en liep helemaal door tot het insturen van bocht 3. In bochten 1 en 2 konden de coureurs er dus voor kiezen om de DRS open te laten staan.

De coureurs mochten DRS op dit deel van het gebied open zetten in een poging van de organisatie om coureurs dichterbij elkaar te brengen voor Wellington Straight. Dit was niet het meest populaire besluit destijds. Zo crashte Marcus Ericsson toen hij zijn DRS niet op tijd dicht deed voor bocht 1. Ook andere coureurs waren niet blij. Lewis Hamilton noemde de verlengde DRS-zone 'zinloos en een beetje gevaarlijk'.

Ook de FIA lijkt niet overtuigd te zijn van het nut van de derde DRS-zone, want voor 2019 is deze weer geschrapt. Wat de precieze reden is, is niet bekendgemaakt. Het is dus ook onduidelijk of de crashes van vorig jaar hier een aanleiding voor zijn. Toenmalig wedstrijdleider Charlie Whiting verdedigde vorig jaar de DRS-zone nog door te stellen dat de crashes het gevolg waren van een keuze van de rijder.

@P.Clemenza. Dan moet de FIA eens de hand in eigen zak steken en de verantwoordelijkheid niet bij de teams neerleggen. Als de FIA gewoon de regels zet voor 2021 en niet over alles in discussie gaat, kan er weer gezonde competitie komen. Zolang de teams een stem hebben zal er nooit iets gebeuren w... [Lees verder]

Laat ze die DRS op achterliggers maar eens afschaffen, dat slaat helemaal nergens op!

  Hoewel het inhalen technisch door een DRS weinig voor stelt,
  wordt er dan tenminste nog wel ingehaald.

  Inderdaad maar afschaffen dus, want dat is veel leuker voor de "fans".
  Want door dat af te schaffen gaan de " fans" echt helemaal uit hun dak,

  al is dat dan over het eeuwige treintje rijden ;)

  Zag daarstraks op FB ene heerlijk fimpje voorbij komen van een epic rondenlang gevecht tussen niemand minder dan Juan Pablo Montoya, Kimi Raikkonen en Michael Schumacher op Magny Cours in 2002.
  
  Geen DRS of niks.
  De 'knappe koppen' die de F1 runnen, waaronder Ross Brawn jeweetwel die altijd zo mistig vanachter z'n grote bril kijkt, moeten de reglementen dusdanig aanpassen dat dit soort racewerk weer mogelijk is zonder een klepje in de achtervleugel open te zetten..
