Raikkonen geniet van meer vrijheid bij Alfa Romeo

Kimi Raikkonen heeft het goed naar zijn zin bij Alfa Romeo. Hij heeft meer vrijheid om te doen wat hij wil buiten het racen om dan bij Ferrari en dat bevalt hem bijzonder goed.

Van Raikkonen is al jarenlang bekend dat hij enorm geniet van het racen, maar dat hij de media- en marketingverplichtingen naast de baan als verplichte kost ziet. De wereldkampioen van 2007 rijdt na vijf seizoenen bij Ferrari sinds begin 2019 bij Alfa Romeo. Naar eigen zeggen heeft Raikkonen het daar goed naar zijn zin, mede doordat hij meer vrijheid heeft, kan doen wat hij wil en minder promotie-activiteiten heeft.

Grote waardering voor lager aantal promotie-activiteiten

"In het grotere plaatje willen we natuurlijk sneller zijn en betere resultaten halen. Als je dat echter buiten beschouwing laat en het laat aankomen op werken, dan is het erg leuk geweest. Er zijn niet zoveel mensen als bij Ferrari of andere teams en er zijn misschien plaatsen waar je wat mensen mist. Ik wist echter dat dit een verschil was en dat maakt het verschil tussen grote en kleine teams."

"Buiten dat heeft het me meer vrijheid gegeven om te doen wat ik wil buiten het racen. Ik hoef niet de hele tijd allerlei soorten promotiedingen te doen. Dat waardeer ik zoveel meer dan mensen misschien over denken. Voor mij is mijn eigen tijd zeer waardevol. Het is absoluut veel beter geweest."

Raikkonen presteert heel redelijk sinds zijn terugkeer bij Alfa Romeo, het voormalige Sauber. De Fin staat na negen races op de negende positie in het WK met 21 punten. Teamgenoot Antonio Giovinazzi heeft het wat lastiger, want die heeft in dezelfde periode pas één puntje verzameld.

  Het is toch al algemeen bekend dat Kimi niet van sponsor en marketing verplichtingen houdt?. Ook persconferenties mijdt hij liever. Verder dat hij gewoon wat hij wil. Af en toe een slokkie en een peukie en vooral lekker nuchter blijven.

  Dat is waar. Hij is duidelijk een karakter op een unieke manier. Daarbij is hij na Vettel en Hamilton de meest succesvolle rijder van het veld en hij is ex wereldkampioen.
  
  Dat hij bijzonder is bleek maar weer eens toen hij overstapte naat Alfa Romeo. Nieuwe sponsors stonden in de rij en er ontstond een jubelstemming door alle gelederen van Alfa Romeo.
  
  Overigens was ik meer een fan van zijn race stijl de eerste jaren van zijn cariere dan van de laatste jaren. En nu hij voor mijn favoriete team rijdt ben ik weer wat meer van van hem geworden. Ik zie hem liever hoog eindigen dan veel andere rijders.

  Ik snap wat je bedoelt. Ik ben al blij dat hij met die a Alfa wat puntjes bij elkaar sprokkelt. Dat kan je van zijn teamgenoot niet zeggen. Met aller respect met Ferrari, Mercedes, en Red Bull zal Alfa niet kunnen strijden maar wel met, Haas, McLaren, en Renault.

Raikkonen is helaas voor hem enkele decenniën te laat geboren. De man had samen met onder andere James Hunt op de grid moeten staan. Een sigaretje in de hand, om de zoveel races een ander mooi meisje naast je en na afloop van de race een flinke lading bier naar binnen werken.

  Dat soort beelden zal je nooit meer te zien krijgen. Als ze nu vlak voor de race een sigaretje roken worden ze gelijk verbannen uit de F1. Maar Kimi steekt er op feestjes er nog graag "eentje" op. Maar Kimi werd altijd al de nieuwe James Hunt genoemd.
