Grand Prix in Londen tot 2023 uitgesloten door nieuwe deal Silverstone

Een Grand Prix in Londen zal er voorlopig niet komen. Het nieuwe contract van Silverstone bevat namelijk een clausule die dat onmogelijk maakt tot 2023, zo vertelden de promotors exclusief aan GPToday.net.

Afgelopen week tekende de British Racing Drivers Club een contractverlenging met de Formule 1 om de Britse Grand Prix de komende vijf seizoenen op Silverstone plaats te laten vinden. Twee jaar geleden werd de ontsnappingsclausule in het lopende contract nog gelicht, omdat de race niet houdbaar was onder de geldende voorwaarden. Volgens BRDC-voorzitter John Grant zal de nieuwe deal minder risico's met zich meebrengen.

"We hadden twee duidelijke doelstellingen die we vanaf het begin nastreefden. We hebben het onze leden meermaals verteld, maar ze geloofden ons nooit. We zeiden dat een prioriteit was om het risico tot een beheersbaar niveau te reduceren en de andere is dat dit economisch gezien nut moet hebben voor ons. Deze doelstellingen hebben we behaald."

Race in Londen zal voorlopig niet gebeuren

Een van de dreigende gevaren voor Silverstone was het verlangen van de Formule 1 en Liberty om een race in Londen te organiseren. Deze race zou een aanvulling moeten vormen op de Britse Grand Prix in Silverstone en paste perfect binnen het doel om meer evenementen in 'destination cities' te organiseren. De nieuwe deal van de BRDC maakt dat de komende jaren onmogelijk.

"Het leek meer realiteit te worden dan we verwachtten. Het was natuurlijk een bron van debat en discussie tussen ons. We vertelden dat ze een Grand Prix in Londen kunnen hebben, maar dat is winst voor hun en de nadelen zijn voor ons. We moeten tot een overeenkomst komen die ons beschermt voor het geval dat gebeurt. Dat is gelukt. De eerste drie jaren gaat het niet gebeuren. Het wordt mogelijk pas op zijn vroegst 2023."

Londen.....mss wel de mooiste stad ter wereld, maar daar ga je natuurlijk geen straten race houden.

Goede zaak, ik zie 1000x liever een race op Silverstone dan een nieuwe optocht door een stratencircuit in een van de meest grauwe steden die ik ken.
