Vasseur wuift geruchten over vervanging Giovinazzi weg

Antonio Giovinazzi beleeft voorlopig geen geweldig jaar tijdens zijn eerste volledige seizoen in de Formule 1. Hoewel de Italiaan op zaterdag steeds vaker zijn ervaren teamgenoot Kimi Raikkonen de baas is, heeft de Fin al 25 punten verzameld, terwijl Giovinazzi pas één punt wist te pakken. Bovendien viel de Ferrari-protégé nogal knullig uit tijdens de laatste Grand Prix in Groot-Brittanië. Teambaas Frédéric Vasseur blijft Giovinazzi desalniettemin steunen en wuift geruchten over een tussentijds vertrek weg.

"Hij doet het geweldig in de kwalificaties," verklaarde Vasseur zijn steun aan Motorsport.com. "Hij matcht Kimi nu op zaterdag en het is nu onze zaak om de boel rustig te houden.Ik maak me nog geen zorgen, want hij doet wat van hem verwacht wordt. Hij pakte een punt in Oostenrijk en had weer een goede dynamiek te pakken op Silverstone, ook daar reed hij voor Kimi. Om heel eerlijk te zijn staat hij niet onder druk, niet van het team of van wie dan ook."

Vasseur prijst Raikkonen

"Kimi reed weer goed," prees Vasseur zijn ervaren coureur. "Een erg sterke en solide race, ondanks dat hij steeds onder druk stond van iemand met DRS, had hij de situatie volledig onder controle. Onze snelheid was goed en we hebben het gat met enkele concurrenten kunnen vergroten. Het was geen perfect weekend, maar als je dan toch vier punten scoort, doe je het gewoon goed."

Ik had nooit een hoge pet van hem op. Helemaal nadat hij in 2017 twee Saubers in 1 weekend afschreef. Dit seizoen zie ik hem echter steeds dichter naar Kimi groeien. Natuurlijk gaan ze hem niet vervangen.

  Toen hij samen met Verstappen in de F3 reed heb ik alle races gezien. Hij was bepaald geen hoogvlieger. Snap niet wat Ferrari met hem moet.

  Ik zou Gasly toch ook op dit lijstje zetten. Eén goed weekend is uiteraard niet voldoende. Als hij het seizoen uitzingt bij RBR en de prestaties blijven wisselvallig, dan kan het na dit seizoen wel eens klaar zijn.

Giovinazzi doet het steeds beter. Nog een paar races en hij heeft Kimi in z'n zak. Zou me als Vasseur meer zorgen om Kimi maken.
