Albon wil nog niet vooruitkijken naar Formule 1-seizoen in 2020

Alexander Albon is halverwege zijn debuutseizoen in de Formule 1. De coureur van Scuderia Toro Rosso heeft nog geen contract voor 2020, maar hij maakt zich geen zorgen over het ontbreken van zo'n overeenkomst.

Na tien van de 21 races in 2019 staat Albon op de vijftiende positie in het kampioenschap met zeven punten. Teamgenoot Daniil Kvyat staat een positie hoger en heeft vijf punten meer gescoord. Albon is al sinds de Monegaskische Grand Prix puntloos, maar zorgen over zijn toekomst maakt hij zich niet. Hij richt zich op het hier en nu, voordat hij zich zorgen wil maken over zijn toekomst in de Formule 1.

"Ik richt me nog steeds gewoon op mezelf. Ik weet wat je bedoelt, maar ik kijk niet over mijn schouder of iets dergelijks. Ik ben nog steeds echt een rookie en ik leer nog veel. Ik ben blij met het seizoen tot nu toe, maar de focus ligt nu op het terugkeren in de punten. Ieder weekend draait erom dat je je verbetert als coureurs, je de feedback en kennis over de auto verbetert. Ik denk dat ik aanvankelijk veel tegelijk leerde, maar dat het nu meer om het finetunen gaat."

F1-auto besturen een heel andere ervaring volgens Albon

Met zijn 23 jaar is Albon de oudste nieuwkomer van het seizoen en ervaring in de autosport had hij dan ook al voldoende opgedaan. Hij heeft Formule Renault 2.0, het Europees Formule 3, een jaar GP3 en twee jaar Formule 2 gereden, voordat hij in 2019 dus promoveerde naar de Formule 1. Volgens de Britse Thai is het racen in een Formule 1-auto echter heel andere koek.

"Deze auto's hebben zoveel downforce. Als je wat grip verliest in de Formule 1, dan verlies je veel tijd. Dat geldt vooral voor de achterbanden. Ik hou ervan om aan de voorkant veel grip te hebben, dus die balans juist krijgen was erg belangrijk. Ik zat in een soort niemandsland waar je niet weet wat je wil met de auto en wat het beste bij de auto past. Nu moet ik iets onafhankelijker zijn in mijn keuzes."

  Albon zit wel goed bij Toro Rosso nu ze Moose als sponsor aan hebben getrokken. Dat bedrijf sponsort Albon zelf ook volgens mij.

Wel leuk dat ie z'n gewenningsproces een beetje uitlegt.

  Dus jij denkt dat de rookies zich niet met de toekomst bezig houden.
  
  Lijkt me best wel belangrijk voor ze, je wil het seizoen erna toch ook rijden en daar voor jou zo'n gunstig mogelijke positie waarborgen.
  
  Dit geldt zelfs voor Leclerc en Norris.
  
  Dat ze zich ook met het hier en nu bezig zijn is vanzelfsprekend.
