Verstappen over pitbrand: "Het voelt alsof je in een verduisterde ruimte zit"

Het is dit jaar 25 jaar geleden dat de auto van Jos Verstappen op angstaanjagende wijze in brand vloog tijdens een pitstop op Hockenheim. "Als het in de pits gebeurt, dan sta je op de veiligst mogelijke plek", zegt de Nederlander er nu over.

Verstappen maakte in 1994 zijn debuut in de Formule 1 bij Benetton, waar hij de teamgenoot was van Michael Schumacher. Hij scoorde dat seizoen twee podiumplaatsen, maar er is een beeld uit zijn debuutseizoen dat meer is blijven hangen: de enorme pitbrand die hij meemaakte in Duitsland. In gesprek met Motorsport.com gaf de vader van Max Verstappen een inkijkje in zijn gedachtengang op dat moment.

"Ik herinner me dat ik naar binnen kwam voor wat ik dacht dat een normale stop zou worden. Zittend in de auto opende ik altijd mijn vizier, omdat ik altijd veel zweette als ik stilstond. Ik opende dus zo snel mogelijk mijn helm toen ik stilstond om wat frisse lucht te krijgen. Toen zag ik de vloeistof komen. Dit was voordat ik iets kon ruiken en daarom zwaaide ik opeens."

"Toen ging alles in vlammen op en was het ineens donker en zwart, en kon ik niet ademen. Het is een situatie waar je normaal niet aan denkt: het is alsof je in een donkere ruimte geplaatst wordt en denkt: 'ik moet naar buiten'. Het was moeilijk om het stuur eraf te halen en dat kostte me wat seconden. Daarna moest ik mijn gordels loskoppelen. Ik moest dus nog veel dingen doen voor ik opstond en me realiseerde wat er gebeurd was."

Verstappen blij dat incident in pits gebeurde

Verstappen liep wat kleine brandwonden op door het incident. Doordat het in de pits gebeurde, kon hij gelukkig snel geholpen worden door zijn team. "Ik herinner me dat het team water op mijn gezicht goot en er daarna crème op deed. Ik ging voor een check naar het ziekenhuis, maar alles zag er redelijk goed uit."

"Mijn ademhaling was ook in orde, want ik denk niet dat ik veel ademhaalde toen het gebeurde. Je wordt bang als je, net als toen Nico Hülkenberg ondersteboven ging in Abu Dhabi, de brandstof of olie ruikt. Als dat echter gebeurt in de pits, dan sta je bijna op de veiligste plek waar het kan gebeuren. Ik heb er dus nooit moeite mee gehad om mentaal om te gaan met wat er gebeurde."

  Valt tegen hoor , Ik kom daar en ik zie niks , ik naar die eigenaar toe en zeg , zorg eerst maar eens dat je de energieleverancier betaald hebt en dan kom ik nog eens terug
