Raikkonen: "Nog veel werk te doen om McLaren te achterhalen"

Kimi Raikkonen weet zich heel 2019 al goed te mengen in de strijd om de plaatsen in de punten. De Fin ziet dat Alfa Romeo haar bolide verbeterd heeft, maar hij ziet dat ze nog tekort komen ten opzichte van McLaren.

Na vijf seizoenen in dienst van Ferrari keerde Raikkonen begin 2019 wederom terug op het oude nest. Deze keer maakte hij de stap naar Alfa Romeo, dat voorheen door het leven ging als Sauber. De wereldkampioen van 2007 doet het vooralsnog goed, want in zeven van de tien races scoorde hij punten. Dat is niet meteen wat Raikkonen voorafgaand aan zijn avontuur verwachtte, zo vertelde hij op de persconferentie in Duitsland.

"Het is lastig te zeggen, want de positie waar ze de afgelopen jaren stonden was niet geweldig. Vorig jaar hebben ze in de tweede helft van het jaar goede progressie geboekt. Ik ging het seizoen gewoon in om het maximale eruit te halen en te zien wat het wordt. We hadden drie, vier lastige races waar we niet echt snel waren, maar daarvan hebben we ons weer wat hersteld. We hebben nog een lange weg te gaan, maar het is niet slecht. We zullen blijven proberen deze auto sneller te maken."

Verbeteringen niet genoeg om McLaren te verslaan

Raikkonen ziet dat Alfa zich dit seizoen duidelijk verbeterd heeft, maar toch is hij niet tevreden. Hij wil graag dichter in de buurt van de McLarens zitten. "Natuurlijk hebben we ons verbeterd, maar ik weet niet hoeveel. Het hangt er vanaf wat je vergelijkt. We vergelijken ons met de mensen bij ons in de buurt en op pure snelheid liggen we nog achter, maar we brengen zoveel mogelijk nieuwe onderdelen als we kunnen om beter te worden."

"De onderdelen werken in ieder geval meestal, dus dat is goed. Voor een klein team als wij duurt het wat langer om nieuwe onderdelen te brengen, maar ik denk dat we redelijk blij zijn met hoe het nu gaat. Er is echter nog wel veel werk te doen om sneller te worden en meer in de buurt van McLaren te komen."

  De nieuwe updates, sinds Silverstone, lijken vooralsnog niet te werken.
  
  In vergelijking met Frankrijk en Oostenrijk is McLaren zeker niet uitgelopen op de rest van de subtop. Maar de vorige keer dat McLaren grote updates meenam in Barcelona had het ook zo 2 a 3 weekenden nodig voordat de progressie zichtbaar werd. Even afwachten dus.
