Renault start in oktober met tests voor 18 inch banden voor 2021

Pirelli zal nog in 2019 beginnen met het testwerk voor de banden van 2021. Renault zal in oktober het eerste team zijn dat de 18 inch banden aan de tand mag voelen.

Een van de veelbesproken veranderingen in de Formule 1 voor 2021 is het formaat van de velgen en de banden. Tot op heden wordt er gebruik gemaakt van velgen met een diameter van 13 inch, maar vanaf 2021 worden dat varianten van 18 inch, zodat het beter bij de huidige standaard op de weg aansluit.

Oorspronkelijk was het plan om pas vanaf 2020 te gaan testen met het nieuwe formaat velgen. De topteams waren dat informeel overeengekomen. Renault heeft daar echter een stokje voor gestoken, want het Franse team is naar Pirelli toegestapt met het verzoek om als eerste met de banden te testen in 2019. Die test zal in oktober plaatsvinden, waarna ook Mercedes en McLaren de banden uit gaan proberen.

Hülkenberg nog niet op de hoogte van test

Tijdens de persconferentie op Hockenheim leek Nico Hülkenberg niet helemaal op de hoogte te zijn van het nieuws. "Ik wist het eerlijk gezegd niet." Volgens de Duitser gaat het Renault geen voordeel opleveren in de ontwikkeling van de auto voor 2021. "Voor zover ik weet, weet je niet op welke compounds je test en wat voor soort band het is. Het is dus lastig voor de teams om er een groot voordeel uit te halen."

De Grand Prix Drivers' Association staat opvallend genoeg niet achter het besluit om naar 18 inch banden over te schakelen. In een tijd waarin de GPDA strijdt voor lichtere auto's, voegt dit alleen maar gewicht toe. "Wist niemand dat dit de auto's nog zwaarder maakt?" vroeg Sebastian Vettel zich tijdens de persconferentie dan ook af.

Vindt die 13" velgen juist bij de F1 horen. En zoals Seb zegt, hebben ze eraan gedacht dat de auto's nu nog zwaarder worden?

  Ik vind juist dat als je als F1 met de tijd mee wilt gaan je ook qua velgformaat met de tijd mee moet gaan.,....
  
  Zoveel zwaarder zullen ze niet worden, aangezien rubber ook nogal wat weegt.... Natuurlijk is iets meer metaal-legering nodig voor de grotere velgen, maar er is een hoop minder rubber nodig en zelfs minder lucht.... Dus die toename zal wel meevallen....

  Vergeet niet dat het hele systeem aangepast moet worden. (Minder vering uit de banden is meer uit de auto zelf).

Veel interessanter is de mededeling van Hulkenberg dat hij het niet weet. Kortom hij is er dan niet meer bij Renault.
