Vettel door turboprobleem klaar na Q1: "Dit is erg pijnlijk"

De zaterdag in Duitsland werd er eentje om snel te vergeten voor Sebastian Vettel. Na een 'pijnlijke' kwalificatie wil de Ferrari-coureur graag vooruit kijken naar de race die zondag op Hockenheim verreden wordt.

Vettel wist in het eerste deel van de kwalificatie geen rondetijd neer te zetten door een probleem in de luchttoevoer naar de turbo. Daardoor kwam hij na zijn outlap naar binnen, om daar vervolgens te blijven staan. Aangezien er verder geen straffen uitgedeeld zijn aan coureurs, zal Vettel de Duitse Grand Prix vanaf achteraan de grid moeten vertrekken in een weekend waar Ferrari sterker oogde dan Mercedes.

"Het is erg pijnlijk," vertelde Vettel na de kwalificatie. "Ik keek ernaar uit om plezier te hebben en ik denk dat de auto geweldig was. Het is erg jammer. Ik weet zeker dat er een reden is voor wat er gebeurde. Dit is het slechts mogelijke moment, maar het is zoals het is."

"We wilden absoluut niet dat dit gebeurde en we moeten gaan begrijpen wat het was en ervoor zorgen dat het niet nogmaals gebeurt. Op dit moment is er niets wat we eraan kunnen doen. We starten nu als laatste, maar het was prettig geweest om als eerste te starten. Ik denk dat de auto het in zich heeft, dus vandaag was niet mijn dag."

Vettel 'leeg' na bittere en teleurstellende dag

Ook Ferrari-teamgenoot Charles Leclerc kampte met een probleem in Q3: iets in het brandstofsysteem zat niet goed bij de Monegask. Tevens heeft Ferrari dit seizoen nog geen race gewonnen, terwijl er al tien wedstrijden verreden zijn. Ook in Duitsland lijkt het dus schier onmogelijk te zijn voor de Scuderia om de eerste zege van 2019 te behalen.

"Ik ben leeg, het is erg bitter en teleurstellend", stelt Vettel. "Vooral om dat de auto hier snel is. Ik had gisteren een goed gevoel en vanochtend was dat nog beter, maar het lukte niet om alles samen te laten komen. Ik dacht dat we echt een goede kans hadden, maar nu hebben we geen kans. Ik kijk nu dus gewoon uit naar de dag van morgen."

Vettel en Ferrari hebben een prima huwelijk. Als hij het niet verkloot, doet Ferrari het wel voor hem, op die manier blijft de bull perfect in balans.
