Nederland heeft er ruim 69 seizoenen op moeten wachten, maar vandaag pakte Max Verstappen dan eindelijk de eerste Nederlandse pole in de geschiedenis van de Formule 1. Dat deed hij op knappe wijze op de Hungaroring.

De droge kwalificatie werd er door het gebrek aan regen niet minder spannend door. Het verschil tussen polesitter Verstappen en nummer 2 Valtteri Bottas liegt er dan ook niet om: slechts 0,018 seconden scheidden de Red Bull en de Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton verzekerde zich van de derde startpositie, terwijl de Ferrari's genoegen moesten nemen met de posities 4 en 5.

Charles Leclerc beleefde in de kwalificatie nog een hachelijk moment door bij het opkomen van het rechte stuk te crashen, maar desondanks kwam hij op eigen kracht terug in de pits. George Russell ontpopte zich tot een van de verrassingen, door bijna Q2 te halen in de Williams.
