Russell: "Williams nog steeds ver van middenmoot verwijderd"

George Russell wist zich in de Hongaarse kwalificatie in de middenmoot te melden, maar desondanks ziet de Brit dat Williams na zijn 'beste weekend van het jaar' nog ver verwijderd is van de rest van het veld.

Op zaterdag kwalificeerde Russell zich op de zestiende positie. Op het allerlaatste moment werd hij door Nico Hülkenberg uit Q2 gedrukt, maar het was wel zijn beste kwalificatie van het seizoen. Dit weekend was het tweede dat Williams met haar verbeterde pakket reed, nadat er vorige week in Duitsland grote updates geïntroduceerd werden.

Volgens Russell zal de tijd leren of het sterkere optreden in Hongarije eenmalig was of dat er echt stappen vooruit gezet zijn. "Het was absoluut het beste weekend van het jaar", vertelde Russell aan onder andere GPToday.net. "Gisteren overtrof alle verwachtingen en waarschijnlijk ook de realiteit. We hebben onze snelheid over één ronde toen absoluut gemaximaliseerd."

"De andere teams maakten wat fouten, want je zag het zooitje met Perez en Ricciardo. Vandaag was meer de realiteit. We hebben een stap gezet, maar zijn nog ver bij de rest weg. Als we zo doorgaan, en dat moeten we doen, dan moeten we vaker mee kunnen doen. Het feit is dat we twee weekenden gedaan hebben met updates: vorig weekend was geen ramp en dit weekend was erg positief. We moeten bekijken of dit weekend eenmalig was of niet."

Williams verwacht meer moeite in België en Italië

Williams verwacht een grote uitdaging op de snelle circuits van Spa-Francorchamps en Monza, waar de eerste twee races na de zomerstop zijn. "We moeten nog steeds werken aan de snelheid van de auto, maar hebben dit weekend verbeteringen gezien. We kunnen nu genieten van de zomerstop, voordat we heel andere uitdagingen op Spa en Monza aan gaan pakken", vertelde senior race engineer Dave Robson.

Ik herhaal hetgeen ik voor weggehoond werd eerder dit jaar:
Williams heeft aan het einde van het seizoen niet de langzaamste auto meer. Ik zeg niet dat ze meer punten zullen hebben dan een ander team. Maar de auto zal sneller zijn dan die van de naaste concurrent: Een Toro Rosso of een Haas.

  Ik zie ze racing point (of iig stroll) en giovinazzi nog wel af en toe pakken (of iig Russell zal dag lukken).
  
  Ben overigens waanzinnig fan van Russell. Vind hem persoonlijk de beste rookie en zie in hem een grote aanwinst voor de toekomst. Hopelijk kan Williams hem een mooie bolide bieden. Heb de combinatie Williams met een Engelse coureur altijd prachtig gevonden.

  Dat zou mooi zijn! Daarnaast ben ik benieuwd hoe Russell zou presteren in een top auto. Ik vermoed dat hij beter is dan een Norris of een Ocon. Maar zou hij het ook op kunnen nemen tegen een Verstappen of een Leclerc?

  Dat heeft Russell op een van de testdagen in een Mercedes toch al laten zien? Ik vind ook dat Russell best in het met rijtje Norris en Leclerc past. Vergeet die Ocon maar en zet Russell in die 2e Mercedes.

  Je mag het lachwekkend vinden Danny. We zullen aan het einde van het seizoen zien wie er gelijk heeft. Ik zeg niet dat Williams meer punten zal hebben, maar wel dat het sneller dat Toro Rosso zal zijn.
