Williams: "Reglementen moeten voorzien in verlaging gewicht F1-auto's"

Het gewicht van Formule 1-auto's is in de afgelopen jaren sterk toegenomen. Volgens Claire Williams is dat een schadelijke zaak. Zij wil graag zien dat de sport er via de reglementen iets aan doet, omdat gewicht besparen duur is.

Tegenwoordig wegen Formule 1-auto's zo'n 740 kilogram inclusief de coureur. In de afgelopen jaren is dat gewicht flink gestegen, want tien jaar geleden wogen de auto's inclusief coureur nog iets meer dan 600 kilogram. De verwachting is dat de auto's voor 2021 nog zwaarder gaan worden, waardoor het gewicht inclusief de coureur mogelijk in de buurt van de 1000 kilogram gaat komen.

Recent riepen een aantal coureurs echter op om het minimumgewicht van de bolides te verlagen. Zij zouden door het hoge gewicht van de auto's vooral veel snelheid en wendbaarheid verliezen in de langzame bochten. Williams onderschrijft de problematiek en vindt dat er een oplossing moet komen. Volgens de teambaas van Williams moet dat wel gebeuren door middel van het reglement, zo vertelde ze exclusief aan GPToday.net.

"Het probleem met het gewicht is iets waar we vele uren over gedebatteerd hebben en ik denk dat het iets is wat aangepakt moet worden. We moeten manieren vinden waarop we het gewicht verlagen. Niet alleen om het racen te verbeteren en de auto's beter te besturen te maken voor de coureurs, maar als het niet via de reglementen gedaan wordt, dan zullen sommige teams het op eigen houtje gaan proberen."

"De grotere teams kunnen het gewicht verlagen, omdat het enorm hoge kosten met zich meebrengt om het gewicht van een F1-auto te verkleinen. De kleinere teams moeten eerst de aerodynamica aanpakken en kijken hoe de banden het houden, terwijl het gewicht het derde ding op de lijst is. Je kan weinig gewicht besparen met een klein budget, maar de grotere teams kunnen dat wel. Dan krijgen we dezelfde problemen als waar we nu over klagen."

Wordt al sinds 2014 over gesproken en geklaagd. Er veranderde niks alleen het tegenovergestelde..

  Tja.. wij fans wilde bredere auto's, waardoor de racers weer echte gladiatoren werden en alle baanrecord's weer aan flarden gereden zouden worden.
  Dat op veel banen inhalen haast onmogelijk geworden is nemen we op de koop toe, want ze kunnen nu op heel veel plekken flat-out.. wauw!
  Ja de auto's zien er mooier uit, maar zie toch liever die slanke wagens van vroeger( toen was alles beter ;-) )

  Voor 1998 ware de wagens ook 2 meter breed. Dat waren hele snelle wagens, dikke motoren enz. Niets mis mee toen. Dat inhalen komt mede door de lengte van de wagens icm het gewicht, klein, wendbaar, licht,meer grond effect en zie daar eens, lijkt wel op karten ineens..
  Al die nog steeds bestaande liflafjes, de lengte (is meer materiaal) en die beugel enz. zorgt voor meer gewicht.

Was het niet zo dat het minimum reglementair omhoog gebracht was om te voorkomen dat coureurs zich in ongezonde mate zouden vermageren?

In mijn beleving rijden de meeste teams (zo niet, alle) met ballast in de auto om te voldoen aan het voorgeschreven minimum

  Je laatste alinea vermeld t probleem. Teams kunnen onder het minimum gewicht komen, maar je mag er niet onder komen. De coureurs en de auto zijn vanaf dit jaar juist gescheiden van elkaar qua minimum gewicht zodat er op het gewicht van de coureur geen voordeel uit gehaald kan worden.

  Misschien moet williams die hopeloos ouderwetse aluminium versnellingsbak er eens uit lazeren en een composiet bak van mercedes kopen, welke afgestemd is op de motor
