Sainz en Vettel steken Hulkenberg hart onder de riem: "Hij verdient een plaats op de grid"

De kans lijkt aanwezig dat Nico Hulkenberg in 2020 niet meer op de Formule 1-grid staat. Esteban Ocon werd gisteren aangekondigd als tweede Renault-coureur en dit is ten koste gegaan van de sympathieke Duitser. Er is nog geen zekerheid over waar de kansen van Hulkenberg voor 2020 liggen, maar Carlos Sainz en Sebastian Vettel zeggen dat het zonde zou zijn als de Duitser het veld moet verlaten.

Geruchten suggereren dat het team van Haas interesse heeft in Hulkenberg, dit zou Romain Grosjean zijn plek kunnen kosten. Teambaas Guenther Steiner maakte duidelijk dat hij op zoek was naar ervaren coureurs die de renstal een 'boost' zouden kunnen geven.

Sainz verrast

Dat de Nederlands-sprekende Duitser zijn plek bij het team van Renault heeft verloren is voor sommige coureurs op de grid verrassend. Carlos Sainz Jr, hedendaags bezig aan een uitmuntend seizoen bij McLaren, gaf gisteren in de paddock aan GPToday.net aan 'verrast' te zijn door de hele situatie.

"Met zijn leiderschap betekende Nico heel veel voor Renault. Hij heeft ze op het huidige niveau gebracht nadat ze in 2016 met toch wel wat moeite hun comeback in de Formule 1 hadden gemaakt."

Aan de andere kant is de situatie tussen Ocon en Renault niet verrassend: "Esteban en Renault zijn altijd al close geweest en het was duidelijk dat deze samenwerking vroeg of laat een keer zou plaatsvinden."

Vettel neemt het op voor zijn landgenoot

"Nico verdient het niet om opzij te worden geschoven", verklaarde landgenoot en viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel over de situatie. "Natuurlijk ken ik de situatie en achtergrond niet, ik hoop van harte dat hij een stoeltje van vinden voor 2020."

Vettel stak daarna Hulkenberg een hart onder de riem: "Een coureur van het kaliber van Nico moet altijd op de grid staan. Hij verdient het om in de Formule 1 te blijven."

Is dat zo? In de races is hij steevast sneller dan Ricciardo. De Zaterdag kost hem plaatsen maar in de races rijdt hij veelal met gemak naar Ricciardo toe of er voorbij. Tenzij het team weer eens roept dat hij erachter moet blijven...

  Ik hou er ook niet van dat coureurs dit soort dingen zeggen in deze situaties.
  Nog irritanter is het dat journalisten ernaar vragen. Ze weten dondersgoed wat het antwoord gaat zijn, dus het is gemakzuchtige journalistiek.

  Nou..... Als Sainz nog totaal niet zeker zou zijn van z'n stoeltje voor 2020, dan had ie misschien alleen gezegd dat hij het jammer vindt voor Hulkenberg....

pfffff,, valse sentimenten .. Was Hulkenberg goed genoeg zouden ze hem echt niet dumpen... Objectief gezien is hij middelmaat... Of hij aardig, sympathiek is , who gives a fuck??

  @ Baron, verrassend dat zo weinig mensen dat opvalt. Duidelijk de snellere in de races. Motorpech in het begin van het seizoen, terwijl Ric in de goot reed. Later 2x Ric niet voorbij genomen van de team. Duidelijke politiek bij Renault.

Hulkenberg is uiteindelijk gewoon van het niveau Heidfeld, Brundle, Trulli gebleken. Prima coureurs, behorend tot het meubilair van de F1, maar ook niet meer dan dat. En dan hebben die drie nog podia gepakt in doorgaans niet het beste materiaal.

Het team van Williams zou Hulkenberg moeten ophalen en Kubica de laan uitsturen. Hoewel ik in het verleden zeer van de rijkunsten van Kubica kon genieten, is hij nu gewoon te traag.
