Sebastian Vettel hoopvol: "Koelere temperaturen moeten in ons voordeel werken"

Sebastian Vettel moest in een kwalificatie waarin Ferrari kans had op de pole position wederom zijn meerdere erkennen in teamgenoot Charles Leclerc. De jonge Monegask heeft dit jaar al 3 pole positions op zijn naam, terwijl Sebastian Vettel, die in zijn gloriejaren bij Red Bull bekend stond als een kwalificatiebeest, alleen in Canada vanaf pole mocht vertrekken. Ondanks een achterstand van zeven tienden op zijn teamgenoot, mag Vettel morgen gewoon vanaf plek 2 starten.

De inmiddels ervaren Duitser had echter wel een verklaring voor het grote verschil van zeven tienden ten opzichte van zijn teamgenoot: "Ja de banden waren inderdaad een probleem. Uiteindelijk is het fijn dat we in ieder geval op de eerste rij starten, maar in het gevecht voor pole zat ik een beetje in een rij tijdens de opwarmronde, maar ik wil geen excuses zoeken. Morgen is de race en de auto is snel, dus ik hoop dat we dat ook in de race kunnen laten zien."

Gevraagd of de snelheid van Mercedes in de racesimulatie geen gevaar voor hem leek zei Vettel: "Nee, de koelere temperaturen zouden in ons voordeel moeten werken. De auto voelde vandaag sowieso beter en de temperatuur zal dalen, maar dat is natuurlijk wel hetzelfde voor iedereen."
