Dit is wat Honda hoopt te verbeteren met de Spec 4-motor

Honda heeft een duidelijk doel voor de vierde specificatie van haar krachtbron voor 2019: het verkleinen van het gat met Mercedes en Ferrari in de kwalificatie. De motorleverancier beseft wel dat de andere fabrikanten ook niet stilzitten.

De Spec 4-motor van Honda werd bij de Belgische Grand Prix van afgelopen weekend geïntroduceerd. In de vrije trainingen reden Alexander Albon en Daniil Kvyat hun eerste meters met de nieuwe krachtbron. Kvyat reed het hele weekend met die motor, terwijl Albon later weer wisselde naar een van de oudere specificaties van de krachtbron van Japanse makelij.

Komend weekend zal Albon wél racen met de nieuwe krachtbron en dat geldt ook voor Pierre Gasly en Max Verstappen. Laatstgenoemden zullen daarvoor een gridstraf ontvangen en van achteraan de grid vertrekken op Monza. Op het circuit waar topsnelheid zo belangrijk is, zal Honda voor het eerst een echte test afleggen met de nieuwe motorspecificatie en wordt duidelijk hoe deze zich verhoudt met de nieuwe motoren van Mercedes en Ferrari.

Kwalificatie belangrijk verbeterpunt voor Honda

Een belangrijke stap hoopt Honda met de Spec 4 te zetten op het vlak van de kwalificaties. Vooralsnog is dat niet het sterkste punt geweest van de Honda-motor, weet ook technisch directeur Toyoharu Tanabe. "Ik hoop het, maar andere motorfabrikanten zijn ook begonnen met het toepassen van hun laatste specificaties. We hebben het verschil in prestaties tussen hun vorige prestaties en Spa nog niet geanalyseerd."

"We zullen hun verbeteringen proberen te vergelijken met die van ons, maar ze wachten niet op ons. Ik hoop dat we het gat dichten, maar de realiteit uit de kwalificatie op Spa laat zien dat er een groot gat is tussen Ferrari en Mercedes - maar ik weet niet of Mercedes problemen had in de kwalificatie. Ik hoop dat we het gat dichten, maar het is niet makkelijk."

Over de eerste test van de Spec 4 in België vertelde Tanabe het volgende aan Autosport. "Onze nieuwe Spec 4 werkte naar behoren en de resultaten van de data zijn zoals we verwachtten. Op dit moment zijn we tevreden. We zullen de data analyseren en de kalibratie proberen te optimaliseren, zodat we de prestaties zoveel mogelijk kunnen verbeteren voor Monza."

      Dat kan zomaar verschillen per motor. Misschien dat met de nieuwe spec motor dit euvel ook verholpen is. Laten we het hopen.

      @sterretje, nee het ligt niet aan de coureur.
      @NvA94, ook Albon had een slechte start in Belgie.

      De procedure van een start gaat als volgt: De auto staat in de 1e versnelling (bij droog weer) dan moet de coureur een bepaald toerental van de motor aanhouden, en als de lichten uitgaan de koppeling flipper loslaten, dit is een elektrisch signaal, dus on/off.
      Wat het team doet, is in de motor mapping de hoeveelheid grip die nodig is in de software instellen...en hier gaat dus iets mis.

      Max gaf in Peptalk al aan dat hij zelf exact dezelfde handeling met de koppeling verricht, maar dat de afstelling van de koppeling in combinatie met de motor teonvoorspelbaar is.

      Een F1 auto heeft geen klassieke koppeling, waar je zelf wel volledige controle hebt over de hoeveelheid gas, hoe snel en hoe lang je de koppeling laat opkomen en hoe lang je de koppeling zelf half vasthoud.

      Bij een F1 auto wordt het grootste deel vooraf ingesteld.

      Ik zou toch graag zien dat coureurs zelf meer controle krijgen zoals bij een ouderwetse schakelbak.

      Bij onze straat auto's woerdt de koppeling bijna altijd bediend door een kabel die vanaf het pedaal naar de koppeling gaat, dus hoe langzamer je de koppeling op laat komen hoe langzamer hij aangrijpt.
      Bij een F1 auto ligt de snelheid van het aangrijpen dus vast in de software van de motor, en wordt dus bij geregeld in de mapping.

    • Ze maken tijdens het weekend meerdere proefstarts en dan hoor ik Max er nooit over alleen op het moment dat het echt goed moet gaan (met de start dus) gaat 't wel erg vaak fout de laatste tijd.

    • Volgens mij was dat probleem al opgelost in de spec 3, en verbeterd in de spec 4.
      Max reed na mijn idee in spa met een de spec 2, dat zal dus voor het grootste gedeelte daar aan gelegen hebben.

    Mocht het regenen, komend weekend, zou ik nog even wachten met die spec 4, in de regen maakt dit toch niet uit. Zal Max vanuit positie 5 starten, kan de race gewoon alle kanten op.

      Niks wachten, nieuwe data..oude rommel eruit. Ze komen nooit in de buurt door heeltijd maar te wachten. Die gridstraffen moet je voor lief nemen.

    • Ik zou zeggen juist wel die spec 4 erin. Met regen kun je nog makkelijker het verschil maken en naar voren rijden. Dan start je de volgende GP weer zonder gridstraf.

      Eigenlijk staat RB met de rug tegen de muur qua gridstraf. Ze zijn haast verplicht om de nieuwe spec nu in te lepelen en de gridstraf dit weekend te pakken. Dat wil je niet in Singapore doen...

    Desondanks maakten ze in de race geen gebruik van die nieuwe motor.( gisteren)

    Alle 4 de rijders met die nieuwe motors gaan rijden, dit seizoen is belangrijk veel data erover te krijgen, dan hopen dat ze er klaar voor kunnen zijn in 2020.

      Ik verwacht dat er in de komende 8 races nog wel een extra motor bij o.a. Verstappen erin moet komen buiten de spec 4 die er dit weekend in gaat. Met de spec 3 en spec 2 heeft ie vooral in Spa de nodige problemen gehad. Volgens Horner kwamen die problemen door het afgelegde aantal kilometers van de motor, de belasting van de motor en de agressieve stand van spec 2 in Hongarije.

      Uit zijn woorden kun je dus opmaken dat in ieder geval de spec 2 aan het einde van zijn levensduur zit en dus niet meer betrouwbaar is. Gek genoeg zijn ze in Spa niet terug gegaan naar spec 3 maar naar de minder krachtige spec 2 terwijl Spa een echt power circuit is waar je juist de meest krachtige motor wilt hebben. Over zijn spec 3 zijn waarschijnlijk dus ook twijfels over de betrouwbaarheid, anders hadden ze die wel op Spa gebruikt aangezien spec 3 krachtiger is dan spec 2. Ook vreemd is dat Honda niet wil zeggen waarom ze dit gedaan hebben, dit terwijl ze normaal altijd vrij open zijn over hun motor etc.

      De spec 4 motor gaat er in Monza in, er moeten nog 8 races gereden worden en Verstappen heeft in zijn pool nog een spec 1 waar voor zover bekend is als enige geen echte problemen mee zijn geweest. Maar die heeft het minst aantal pk's van alle motoren in zijn pool en is dus eigenlijk alleen voor Singapore interessant, en misschien nog Rusland. Zou knap zijn als ze met de nieuwe spec 4 motor 6 a 7 races kunnen rijden terwijl de vorige specs gemiddeld 4 a 5 races hebben gedaan.

      De spec 1,2 en 3 motoren worden steeds opgeknapt, maar er mag een aantal zaken niet vervangen worden omdat ze het dan zien als een "nieuwe" motor. Bijvoorbeeld de kapotte zuiger die Leclerc zn eerste overwinning kostte is volgens mij gewoon vervangen en die motor is de race daarop gewoon weer gebruikt. Ik verwacht eigenlijk dat de oudere motoren wel up to date gehouden worden.

    • @rice t/m spec.3 is er vooral gewerkt aan de betrouwbaarheid en het beschikbare vermogen tijdens de race. Voor de spec.3 zijn de MGU-H en turbo aangepakt en bij de komende spec.4 is de ICE geupdate. Tevens is er door Exon Mobile gewerkt aan een nieuwe brandstof. De spec.4 kun je dus zien als een second stage rocket engine.
      Uit de beschikbare data van Spa is nou niet gebleken dat de spec.4 tijdens de kwalificatie echt sneller was dan de spec.3. Deze conclusie heb ik getrokken uit de verschillen tussen Kvyat en Gasly die met beide specs reden.

      Ze komen dus nog steeds 10km/h te kort op het rechte stuk tov Ferrari en bijna niets tov Mercedes dus die kunnen ze nu echt pakken.
      Het doel van Honda dit jaar is om op gelijke hoogte te komen met Mercedes en die missie lijkt te slagen.

      Beschikbare data van slechts dat ene rondje die beide heren in de Q1 konden rijden vanwege de rode vlag door Giovinazzi?!
      En Kvyat die niet eens wou kwalificeren vanwege zijn gridstraffen.

    • @Pietje Bell, adv de snelheden die ze bij de speedtrap en sectoren lieten zien gedurende het weekend. Ik weet alleen niet of ze de kwalificatie modus hebben gebruikt. Dat is waar de spec.4 voornamelijk voor is gebouwd. Volgens Honda is bij de spec.4 vooral de ICE aangepast, maar ook de airintake, sump pump en turbo.

      Ik neem aan dat ze de motoren hebben getest op vol vermogen anders heb je er niets aan om ze uberhaupt te gebruiken op Spa.

    • T, is trouwens niet echt te vergelijken met een inlaatspruitstuk ,, zoals de meeste mensen dat kennen van een ‘gewone’ auto ,, tw een aantal buizen die naar die cilinderkop lopen..     En maar blijven hopen dat Honda en RB ooit de wereldtitel in de wacht sleept,ik betwijfel het en volgend jaar weer achter de feiten aan lopen,het gaat nog heel lang duren voordat Max voor het WK gaat meedoen,helaas.

    • Even voor de duidelijkheid, alleen snelheid is niet alles. Ferrari pakte zijn 1e overwinning. RBR heeft er al 2 en daarbij waren ze zeer competitief in Engeland en Hongarije. Waarbij bij de laatste toch ook echt wel winkansen waren met een auto korter op Ham.

      Spa en Monza zijn nu net 2gp’s achter elkaar waar het wat minder zal zijn.
      Zo heeft Ferrari niets zoeken gehad in Monaco en Hongarije om iets te noemen.

      Men vergeet ook vaak dat het hun eerste jaar is samen.

      Ik ben toch hoopvol, het is natuurlijk niet zo dat ze zomaar ff de snelste motor en auto bouwen.

    Is het nu zo dat RB er voor kan kiezen om twee nieuwe spec 4 motoren te introduceren bij 1 wagen en extra gridstraffen te pakken, ze starten immers toch al achteraan, zodat ze een extra motor in de poel hebben voor de resterende races?
