Mercedes raakt belangrijke schakel technisch team kwijt

Mercedes moet definitief afscheid nemen van Aldo Costa. Het voormalige hoofd engineering van de Engels-Duitse renstal zal per 2020 de overstap maken naar racewagenfabrikant Dallara.

Vorig jaar kondigde Mercedes al aan dat Costa, die op dat moment het hoofd engineering van het team was, een stapje terug zou doen. Om meer tijd met zijn familie door te kunnen brengen, werd besloten om de Italiaan afstand te laten doen van zijn vorige rol en verder te laten gaan als adviseur van het team. Eind september komt er echter een volledig einde aan die samenwerking.

Rol als technisch hoofd bij Dallara voor Costa

Costa krijgt namelijk de kans om als technisch directeur aan de slag te gaan bij Dallara. De Italiaanse wagenbouwer, dat onder andere de chassis' voor de IndyCar Series, Formule 2, Formule 3 en het Haas F1 Team ontwikkelt en bouwt, biedt de Italiaan de kans om dichterbij huis en zijn familie te gaan werken. Als technisch hoofd van Dallara zal Costa per 2020 aan veel autosportprojecten werken, terwijl hij ook gaat helpen met het ontwikkelen van de volgende generatie ingenieurstalent uit Italië.

"Aldo was een van de pilaren van ons teams sinds hij in 2011 bij ons kwam, en nu verlaat hij ons met dezelfde waardigheid en professionaliteit die zijn jaren met ons gekarakteriseerd hebben", stelt teambaas Toto Wolff. "Aldo's passie voor racen staat buiten kijf - zowel in het kantoor van de ingenieurs als, soms, in de cockpit. Hij wilde terug naar Italië om meer tijd met zijn familie door te brengen, maar hij heeft nog steeds veel energie en expertise om bij te dragen aan de autosportgemeenschap."

Voordat Costa zich in 2011 bij Mercedes voegde, werkte hij lange tijd bij Ferrari. Hij voegde zich na een periode bij Minardi in 1995 bij de Scuderia, waar hij onder andere hoofdontwerper en technisch directeur was.

  Mee eens, altijd een doorn in het oog hoe makkelijke de Scuderia erg capabale mensen de laan uitstuurt als verwachtingen niet worden waargemaakt. Ook al was de 2011 wagen echt een vrachtwagen. Prost z'n woorden, niet de mijne natuurlijk ;)

  wat als ze dat geprobeerd hebben maar hij niet wil.
  de functie die hij nu gaat doen is er ook wel één met een leuke uitdaging als je ziet waar Dallara allemaal chassis voor maakt.
