Alexander Albon testte met andere helmfabrikant tijdens VT1 op Monza

Alexander Albon zal mogelijk op korte termijn de overstap maken naar een andere helmfabrikant. De Red Bull Racing-coureur probeerde tijdens de eerste vrije training een helm uit van Arai.

De oplettende kijker zag tijdens de eerste vrije training op Monza dat Albon met een vrijwel volledig witte helm reed, iets wat normaal gesproken niet het geval is. Max Verstappen is van de Red Bull-coureurs de man met het meeste wit in zijn ontwerp, terwijl de helm van Albon normaal gesproken overwegend rood met donkerblauw en geel is.

Het afgelopen jaar maakte Albon gebruik van helmen van Bell, maar de witte helm uit VT1 in Italië was van andere makelij. Een woordvoerder van Red Bull Racing bevestigde tegenover GPToday.net net de Thai een test uitvoerde met materiaal van Arai. Dat is ook meteen de reden dat Albon met een witte helm in actie kwam.

Onduidelijk of Albon definitief andere leverancier kiest

Het is nog niet duidelijk of Albon de rest van het weekend vasthoudt aan de helm van Arai, of dat hij later in het weekend weer overschakelt op zijn 'vaste' helmleverancier Bell. Mocht hij definitief gaan kiezen voor een wijziging, dan is hij daarmee niet de eerste Red Bull-coureur die dat dit jaar doet. Verstappen wisselde voor aanvang van het seizoen 2019 juist van Arai-helmen naar materiaal van Schuberth.

Red Bull Racing-ontwerper Adrian Newey was destijds niet gelukkig met die keuze van Verstappen. In de ontwerpfase is Newey uitgegaan van een helm van Arai in zijn berekeningen van de luchtstromen rond de luchtinlaat boven het hoofd van de coureur. Een eventuele wissel van Albon naar een helm van Arai zou waarschijnlijk op meer goedkeuring kunnen rekenen van de topontwerpen.

Heel eerlijk gezegd vind ik het weinig boeiend wat voor helm ze dragen.

  Heel eerlijk gezegd vind ik het boeiender als men de Duitse helm van de coureurs eens onder de loep neemt.
  Zo zijn er behalve verschillen in de maatvoering ook duidelijk verschillende ontwerpen in omloop.
  Daarnaast is de mate waarin de coureurs de helm gepoetst houden, hoe vaak deze gebruikt wordt en of deze wel of niet van een rubberen coating voorzien is interessant voor de echte F1 freak.

  @donshere Ik denk dat het eerder een hint is richting de hele volksstammen die toch blijkbaar geobsedeerd zijn door helmen... dat het allemaal vrij triviaal is.
  Ik snap er i.i.g. ook maar weinig van.

Werd op Sky ook al uitgebreid over gesproken.. Beetje betere uitleg dan alleen dat hij zo mooi glimt, zelfs de aero van de helm kan belangrijk zijn, met name voor de air-intake , precies , dat gat net boven het hoofd (helm) van de coureur.. Zeer belangrijk gaatje bij een F1 auto....

  IN het begin van het jaar moest Verstappen wel met een Schubert rijden, omdat de Arai helm niet goed gekeurd was. Toen kwam Verstappen er achter dat de Schubert helm veel stiller is dan de Arai, waardoor Verstappen de voorkeur heeft gegeven aan de Schubert (wat overigens vroeger ook het merk van Schumacher was).
