'De nieuwe Verstappen of Vettel pluk je niet zomaar uit de boom'

Franz Tost is het niet eens met de kritiek op het opleidingsprogramma van Red Bull Racing. Volgens de teambaas van Scuderia Toro Rosso mag niet verwacht worden dat er ieder jaar een nieuwe Max Verstappen opstaat.

Het opleidingsprogramma van Red Bull staat bekend als meedogenloos, maar toch zijn er een aantal grote coureurs uit het programma voortgekomen.Verstappen is de huidige sterkhouder van het programma, terwijl Sebastian Vettel namens Red Bull vier keer wereldkampioen werd. Ten slotte werd ook Daniel Ricciardo racewinnaar met het Oostenrijkse team.

Momenteel lijkt de aanvoer van grote talenten echter gestokt te zijn. Na Alexander Albon, Pierre Gasly en Daniil Kvyat valt een leemte met coureurs die vooralsnog niet rijp zijn voor de Formule 1. Lucas Auer en Patricio O'Ward lijken niet in aanmerking te komen voor de Formule 1, terwijl Yuki Tsunoda, Liam Lawson en Jüri Vips momenteel in de Formule 3 ervaring opdoen voor een stap omhoog.

De kritiek op het programma van Red Bull vindt Tost echter niet terecht. "De aanvoer is er. Het is echter niet zo dat de Max Verstappens en Vettels als appels aan de bomen groeien, waardoor je ze elke herfst kan plukken. Er rijden momenteel een aantal jonge coureurs in de Formule 3 en ik denk dat een aantal van hen een toekomst hebben, maar daar is tijd voor nodig", vertelde hij aan Reuters.

Tost voert druk al snel op bij Toro Rosso

De druk is groot bij coureurs die bij Toro Rosso debuteren in de Formule 1 en dat maakt Tost ze ook meteen duidelijk. "Zodra jonge coureurs naar Toro Rosso komen, vertel ik ze altijd dat hun echte autosportleven nu begint. Ze moeten gefocust en geconcentreerd zijn, en voor 100 procent voor de Formule 1 leven. Sommigen van hen begrijpen dat, maar anderen niet. En als ze dat niet begrijpen, vliegen ze eruit. Zo simpel is het."

Voorafgaand aan het seizoen voorspelde Tost zonder blikken of blozen dat Alexander Albon de verrassing van het seizoen zou kunnen worden, terwijl Honda races zou winnen. Vooral om de laatste uitspraak werd de Oostenrijker uitgelachen, maar dat doet hem helemaal niets. "Mensen lachen vaak om mij, maar meestal heb ik het bij het rechte eind."

ssssssssssst tosti. Volgens sommige hoort Verstappen er nog niet bij. Je moet eerst in een dominante wagen titels winnen. Pas dan ben je goed.

  Ik kijk per race wie naar behoren of goed presteert.
  Ik heb geen echte favorieten wat coureurs betreft. Ik heb ook geen enkel favoriet team , alleen bij vlagen gun ik sommige topteams niet het succes wat ze hebben behaald, omdat de teams er achter met mindere middelen net zo hard werken .
  Ik ben geen Fanboy , maar ik gun teams als Willams , Sauber en zeker McLaren toch wel wat meer succes.
