Grand Prix van Australië strikt S5000 als supportklasse voor 2020

De puzzelstukjes rond de Grand Prix van Australië beginnen langzamerhand op hun plek te vallen. De organisatie van de race in Melbourne heeft de nieuwe single seater-klasse S5000 gestrikt voor een optreden in het voorportaal van de Formule 1.

Half maart zal de Formule 1 het seizoen 2020 aftrappen op het stratencircuit door Albert Park in Melbourne en de fans zullen genoeg spektakel te zien krijgen. Naast de Formule 1 als hoofdgerecht konden de toeschouwers de afgelopen jaren ook genieten van races van de Australische Supercars. In 2020 komt daar dus nog een toetje bij, want de S5000 zal ook haar opwachting maken tijdens het Grand Prix-weekend.

Melbourne opening S5000-seizoen 2020

De S5000 is een nieuwe single seater-klasse die haar races vooral rijdt in Australië. Komend weekend maakt de klasse haar debuut met een race op Sandown en in maart staat dus een volgend hoogtepunt te wachten, nadat er een uitnodiging kwam van de Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC), de organisatie achter de Australische Grand Prix. Die race moet voor de S5000 de eerste van het seizoen 2020 worden.

"Er is altijd veel behoefte bij onze fans om spannende activiteiten op de baan te zien, dus de spannende S5000 past daardoor perfect bij ons evenement", zegt AGPC-CEO Andrew Westacott. "De AGPC probeert altijd de volgende generatie coureurs te inspireren en het is een fantastische kans voor alle betrokkenen dat we een nieuwe Australische autosportklasse een internationaal podium kunnen geven."

Van 20 tot en met 22 september komt de S5000 dus voor het eerst in actie op het circuit van Sandown. Voor die race wist de organisatie meteen een grote naam te strikken met Rubens Barrichello.
