De strijd om pole position was kort, maar erg intens. Twee mannen waren overduidelijk het beste: Hamilton en Verstappen. Hamilton reed een absoluut baanrecord met zijn 1:36.015, terwijl de Nederlander drie tienden toe moest geven op de regerend wereldkampioen. Sebastian Vettel kon het tempo niet volgen en zette op 0,6 seconde de derde tijd neer. Bekijk hier wat de Mercedes-coureur allemaal moest doen om de beste ronde te rijden.
