Interview: Benjamin Durand over plannen Panthera voor toetreding tot Formule 1

Panthera Team Asia heeft serieuze ambities om in 2021 de Formule 1 te betreden. Het team van mede-oprichter Benjamin Durand is momenteel drukdoende om alle zaken te regelen om in 2021 te kunnen debuteren.

Afgelopen maand kon GPToday.net onthullen dat Panthera in 2021 de Formule 1 wil betreden met een volledig nieuw team. In Singapore sprak GPToday.net met Durand onder andere over hoe het team van plan is om aan het Formule 1-avontuur te beginnen. Het doel is om uiteindelijk als team zo zelfstandig mogelijk te opereren, maar in de eerste jaren zal er toch het een en ander ingekocht gaan worden bij andere teams en leveranciers.

"We zullen het gemengd doen, omdat we het team moeten ontwikkelen", stelt Durand. "Om dat te kunnen doen, moeten we in de eerste jaren de onderdelen in kunnen kopen die we nodig hebben. Zo kunnen we het team opbouwen. De doelstelling is wel om uiteindelijk meer op Williams te gaan lijken dan op Haas. De referentie voor ons zal een model zijn als die van Racing Point en Alfa Romeo."

Hoofdkwartier in eerste instantie in Groot-Brittannië

Panthera wordt een Formule 1-team met Aziatische roots, dat in Durand en Michel Orts twee Franse oprichters heeft. De financiële steun voor het team komt volgens Durand uit Azië en op termijn is het plan ook om het team daar te vestigen. Aanvankelijk zal de uitvalsbasis vermoedelijk in Groot-Brittannië komen. "We zullen onze eerste fabriek in Groot-Brittannië neerzetten, maar uiteindelijk willen we naar Azië verhuizen."

"Dat is het een project voor de lange termijn. We willen een fabriek gaan neerzetten in Azië, maar we zullen meer over ons plan vertellen als we dat weten", vervolgt Durand, die stelt dat de keuze voor Groot-Brittannië een logische is. "Om te kunnen beginnen, moeten we echter opstarten in het gebied waar de zaken gedaan worden, zodat we ook makkelijker mensen kunnen aannemen."

Panthera druk in gesprek met 'betrokken instanties'

Het is nog niet duidelijk of Panthera in 2021 een startbewijs krijgt voor de Formule 1, maar volgens Durand is het team druk in gesprek met ‘de betrokken instanties’ om alles gereed te krijgen. "Denk daarbij aan leveranciers, de commerciële rechtenhouder, het regelgevend orgaan en partijen buiten de Formule 1 die ons van zaken kunnen voorzien."

Zo is Panthera onder andere bezig met het vinden van een motorleverancier voor hun F1-debuut. "We hebben gesprekken gehad met meerdere motorleveranciers, maar er is nog niets getekend", stelt Durand. "We zijn nog in gesprek en momenteel kijken de fabrikanten wat ze wel en niet kunnen doen."

  @Leo , bij zulk soort teams kunnen teams als Ferrari, Mercedes enz.., talenten uit de opstartklasses stallen ,in combinatie met een motordeal.

Welke motor opties zijn er? Mercedes en Ferrari hebben 3 teams en zeggen op hun max te zitten. Honda heeft zich exclusief aan Red Bull verbonden, en Renault heeft 2 teams. Lijkt me dat de laatste een van de weinige keuzes wordt.

  Raar dat Mercedes dat zegt want ze hebben tot en met 2014 ook 4 teams geleverd, en toen mochten er nog meer motoren gebruikt worden per seizoen.

Kansloze missie, maar ga vooral je gang. Blijkbaar niet meegekregen dat Mercedes is gestopt met het ontwikkelen van benzine- en dieselmotoren? Motorendeal met Williams is verlengd tot en met 2025. Dat doen ze niet voor niks, die gaan in een paar jaar helemaal over naar Formule-E, let maar op. Van Renault hoeven we ook niet veel te verwachten en wil zo snel mogelijk met een elektrische personenauto van rond de 10K komen. Kortom, de F1 in haar huidige benzinevorm is ten dode opgeschreven.
