Geheel tegen de verwachting in wist Charles Leclerc zaterdag de pole position te pakken voor de Grand Prix van Singapore. Het was voor de Ferrari-coureur zijn derde pole position op rij.

Vooraf werd gedacht dat Ferrari in Singapore het derde team zou zijn, want op papier leek het bochtige stratencircuit beter bij de Mercedes en de Red Bull te passen. In de kwalificatie demonstreerde Leclerc echter dat de Scuderia een enorme stap gezet heeft sinds de Hongaarse Grand Prix: op de rechte stukken blijft het team dominant, maar ook in de bochten kan het nu redelijk goed bijblijven.

De vergelijking van de kwalificatierondjes van Leclerc en nummer 2 Lewis Hamilton maakt dat duidelijk. Over het algemeen is de Mercedes in de bochten nog altijd iets sneller, maar het verschil met de Ferrari is op dat vlak niet groot genoeg meer om de op de rechte stukken opgelopen achterstand in te lopen.
