Hamilton: "Mercedes verliest acht tienden op de rechte stukken"

Lewis Hamilton weet wel waar Mercedes het verliest in Rusland. De regerend wereldkampioen stelde na afloop van de vrije trainingen op vrijdag dat Ferrari op de rechte stukken liefst acht tienden van een seconde wint.

Mercedes eindigde in geen van de sessies bovenaan. In VT1 was het Ferrari dat met Charles Leclerc de snelste was, in VT2 stonden Max Verstappen en Red Bull Racing juist op P1. Hamilton sloot die laatste sessie op de vierde positie af, waarbij hij een Ferrari voorbleef - maar hij gelooft wel dat de rivalen van Mercedes het beter gedaan hebben qua begrip en het boeken van progressie in Sochi.

"Het was een dat van ontdekken", vertelde Hamilton aan onder andere GPToday.net. "Het begon niet verkeerd, maar daarna ging het niet echt beter, terwijl de anderen redelijk veel progressie boekten. We verwachtten dat we acht tienden van een seconde op de Ferrari's zouden verliezen, maar desalniettemin verbeteren we ons. Zij hebben zich echter serieus verbeterd. We proberen uit te zoeken hoe we de auto moeten verbeteren, maar dat is niet makkelijk."

Moeite om juiste afstelling te vinden in Sochi

Hamilton voegde eraan toe dat hij op vrijdag 'constant een balanceeract' aan het doen was. Hij gaf toe dat hij de nodige moeite had om een goede afstelling te vinden. "De balans van de auto begon goed, maar daarna werd het even minder. Tegen het einde van de tweede sessie werd het echter weer iets beter."

"Het is raar, want je probeert constant om de progressie van het circuit in de gaten te houden. Zodra het circuit beter wordt, verandert de balans en moeten we wat veranderingen doorvoeren. De voor- of achterkant wordt dan beter, dus het is constant balanceren. We hebben maar een paar kansen om de afstelling te veranderen. Het wordt morgen een zware dag, maar ik hoop dat het gaat regenen."

Zoveel nu ook weer niet hoor. ik zag bij de topsnelheid ook dat Verstappen bovenaan stond. Misschien gewoon met iets minder downforce gaan rijden?

  Ja, ik las dat. Zeer opvallend nieuws!
  Dus Mercedes gaat dan 4 teams van motor voorzien? Dan zouden ze aan McLaren nog wel een zware dobber kunnen krijgen. Die acht ik wel in staat om een goed chassis te bouwen.
  Maar zo snel alweer afscheid nemen van Renault.... tja, die zien ook wat Red Bull al zag: er gebeurt te weinig daar.

  Typisch, maar ook weer niet, Renault is een directe concurrent van McLaren, dus rij je liever niet met hun motoren.
  Toen McLaren overstapte van mercedes naar Honda, was het nog met het verhaal dat je als klant nooit WK gaat worden,......nu gaan ze weer terug, en blijven ze ook gewoon weer klant.
  Buiten een betere betrouwbaarheid zal het weinig uitmaken met welke motor je over twee jaar rijdt.
  Je ziet nu al dat de motoren steeds dichter op elkaar zitten qua prestaties.
  Kan ook misschien een financiële beslissing zijn, want ik begreep dat Renault meer geld vroeg voor hun motoren.

Mercedes heeft het ineens niet meer , maar de rest van dit seizoen af en toe op het podium , al is het de 3e plaats , is meer dan voldoende van Hamilton , en dat moet denk ik nog wel lukken

  even vandaag en morgen aankijken. Maar als ze dan weer niet goed gaan geeft dat iig wel een beetje hoop voor volgend jaar. Dan zou het wel eens echt tussen 3 teams kunnen gaan. zijn ze eindelijk een keer een beetje uitontwikkeld?

  Ze hebben marge genoeg, en zijn nog steeds snel, dus dat WK zit wel snor.
  Maar toch begint de hegemonie van Mercedes langzaam wat af te brokkelen, wat alleen maar goed is voor de F1.
  Nu nog het gat tussen de top en de rest wat kleiner, en het gaat echt weer leuk worden....;)

  Ik ben herl erg blij met deze ontwikkeling. Hopelijk gaan wij terug naar de situatie van 2007, 2008 of 2010 toen twee of meer teams aan elkaar gewaagd waren.
