Gasly: "Yamamoto bood zijn verontschuldigingen aan voor rijden in VT1"

Pierre Gasly zal tijdens de eerste vrije training in Japan zijn Toro Rosso afstaan aan Naoki Yamamoto, die volgens de Fransman zelfs zijn verontschuldigingen aanbood voor het feit dat hij het zitje overneemt in VT1.

Qua weersomstandigheden lijkt het Grand Prix-weekend in Japan abnormaal te gaan worden. Op zaterdag zal er volgens de voorspellingen een tyfoon over het land heen razen, terwijl het nog niet helemaal duidelijk is hoe het weer in de rest van het weekend gaat zijn. De eerste vrije training lijkt droog te gaan verlopen, maar Gasly gaat die in ieder geval niet meemaken: Super Formula-kampioen Yamamoto vervangt hem tijdens die sessie.

“Hij heeft zelfs zijn verontschuldigingen aangeboden dat hij in mijn auto plaatsneemt", vertelde Gasly tegenover onder andere GPToday.net. "Ik vind dat geen probleem, want al sinds het begin van het jaar zat dit in de planning. Ik heb tegen hem gezegd dat hij van iedere ronde moet genieten. Ik weet dat het een goede gast is die erg snel en getalenteerd is. Hij kent Suzuka beter dan wie dan ook."

"Het is een droom om deze auto’s te mogen besturen, dus ik heb gezegd dat hij van iedere ronde moet genieten. Ook heb ik hem een aantal tips gegeven, want natuurlijk is de Super Formula anders qua banden, hoe de auto zich gedraagt. Hij heeft in de simulator gezeten en hij vond een aantal dingen behoorlijk anders dan in de Super Formula. Ongeacht van het weer zal het een drukke sessie voor hem worden.”

Zal wel iets cultureels zijn. Voor westerlingen zou zoiets nou niet echt getuigen van een killer-mentaliteit, maar wellicht ontpopt onze Yamamoto zich wel tot de F1-samoerai waar het land van de rijzende zon zo naar smacht. Maar als ik een vergelijking mag trekken met rijders met een vergelijkbare culturele achtergrond: De goedlachse en uiterst beleefde Nakajima wist niet te imponeren, de brutale Kobayashi daarentegen een echte held.

  Zeer prettig land om te verblijven vond ik ondanks soms wat gebrekkige communicatie die ook voor hilarische situaties kan zorgen.

Zomaar 'n onderbuik gevoel, maar ik ben er bijna zeker van, dat ik denk dat Naoki Yamamoto 'n betere piloot zal zijn dan Pierre Gasly.

  In 2017 gooide een tyfoon roet in het eten voor het laatste weekend
  van de Super Formula, weekend werd afgelast, anders was Gasly
  zeker kampioen geworden.
  Hij boekte veel meer progressie dan Hiroaki Ishiura,
  die 0,5 pnt voor stond. Kijk eens hoeveel pnt Yamamoto behaald heeft.

  Maar in tussentijd is Yamamoto kampioen van Super Formula 2018, kampioen SuperGT en hij staat, dacht ik, weer aan top in de Super Formula.
  Dan is het geen kleintje, alhoewel de Japanners niet groot zijn.

  Hij is zeker wel een goede coureur, maar heeft er wel erg lang over gedaan om zo goed te worden. Wisselende resultaten.
  Gaat hij zich nog verbeteren?
  Gasly staat nog maar aan het begin en ik mag toch hopen dat hij zich nog erg gaat verbeteren, hij is nog erg jong.
