Stoppen F1-races door regen ziet er volgens Raikkonen 'belachelijk' uit

Kimi Raikkonen baalt ervan dat de coureurs in de Formule 1 al snel niet meer kunnen rijden als het regent. Volgens de wereldkampioen van 2007 is dat het gevolg van de banden van Pirelli, die het water gewoonweg niet kunnen afvoeren.

In de loop der jaren zijn er steeds vaker Formule 1-races stilgelegd op het moment dat het regende. Een bekend voorbeeld daarvan is de Grand Prix van Maleisië in 2009 (destijds nog met Bridgestone-banden), maar ook de Canadese Grand Prix van 2011 en de Braziliaanse Grand Prix van 2016 moesten (tijdelijk) gestaakt worden vanwege de regen. Op andere momenten, zoals het meest recentelijk tijdens de Grand Prix van Duitsland van dit jaar, wordt de safety car ingezet om de race te neutraliseren.

Het is een ontwikkeling die veel fans betreuren. Zij zien de coureurs veel liever duels uitvechten in de regen, maar volgens Raikkonen is het logisch dat dit tegenwoordig niet meer mogelijk is. De Alfa Romeo-coureur baalt er zelf ook van dat races gestaakt worden door de regen, maar door de regenbanden van Pirelli kan het volgens hem niet anders.

"Ik denk dat het zal gaan zoals normaal, door met de safety car te gaan rijden. Het kan echter ook zo zijn dat ze het na de vrijdag helemaal cancelen als het er slecht uitziet. Ik weet niet precies hoe het werkt. We weten echter hoe gelimiteerd we zijn door de banden, want we weten hoe snel we aquaplanen als het regent. Dan heb je natuurlijk nul controle", vertelde de Fin aan onder andere GPToday.net.

"Toen ik net begon in de Formule 1, hadden we geen problemen als het keihard regende. Het is duidelijk dat de banden niet op hun best zijn met stilstaand water. Zo is het helaas. Het lijkt misschien alsof er weinig water staat en het ziet er belachelijk uit dat we soms niet kunnen rijden, maar zo is het nu in de regen. Je verliest dan de controle over de auto. Als het gaat regenen zoals ze voorspellen, dan is het duidelijk dat we niet gaan rijden."

Vraag die dan rest is waarom zijn de regenbanden van tegenwoordig dan zoveel slechter in het afvoeren van genoeg water?!? Werk aan de winkel dus voor Pirelli en ook voor de FIA en/of FOM (wie er ook over gaat) om dat af te dwingen..

  Pirelli maakt al hun (specs) banden, exact zoals voorgeschreven is door de FIA, Elke andere, willekeurig gekozen bandenleverancier, zou zodoende tegen precies dezelfde problemen aanlopen, dus het maakt daardoor geen ene reet uit welke fabrikant die banden maakt.

  Precies, het zal een combinatie van factoren zijn. Doe auto's zijn ook loeizwaar en breed en lang. Het is op een natte baan alsof je een boot in het water probeert om te keren.

  Toch apart, die auto’s van tegenwoordig zien eruit als een doorgezakte kano, dan zou dat in de regen toch goed moeten gaan eigenlijk?
  
  Ze moeten de wielbasis maar weer eens flink inkorten, waar is dat fout gegaan? Butt-ugly die auto’s van tegenwoordig qua proporties dan, zet zo’n F2004 eens naast zo’n kano van tegenwoordig dat is toch veueueul mooier? Gewoon een metertje er vanaf. Hop.

De coureurs laten ook vaak de regenbanden links liggen om op intermediates te gaan rijden. Vervolgens klagen ze dat de situatie te zwaar is.

Dat kan wat zeggen over de coureurs of de banden.

Dat risico op aquaplannen is juist een coureur onderscheidende factorm zucht, je hoeft niet volgas, maar dan ga je langzamer.

Meer uit de middelen halen die tot je beschikking staan, dat is sport en de uitdaging.

Dat de wagens nagenoeg onbestuurbaar worden bij een druppel water, dat is voor iedereen hetzelfde, alleen met een mindere wagen meer dan met een betere, tenzij bijvoorbeeld die Williams als een kogel zou gaan in het drijfnat, dan krijg je weer es wat anders dan de voorspelbare eerste 6 zonder technische malheur.

  al rijden ze de hele race stapvoets, ze kunnen toch zelf wel inschatten hoe hard het verantwoord is met de auto om te gaan? of konden alleen hele groten dat? zoals Clark, Stewart, Lauda, Prost, Senna, Piquet en ja zelfs Mansell, zijn gevecht in de regen door 130r was echt nagelbijtend op randje van de bank zittend spannend.
