Nico Hülkenberg onthult: "Natuurlijk voer ik gesprekken met Alfa Romeo"

Waar de toekomst van Nico Hülkenberg ligt, is nog altijd onduidelijk. Wel geeft de Duitser toe dat hij in gesprek is met Alfa Romeo om in 2020 voor het Zwitsers-Italiaanse team in actie te komen.

Na negen seizoenen in de Formule 1 kan de loopbaan van Hülkenberg na de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi tot een (voorlopig) einde komen. Momenteel komt hij nog uit voor Renault, maar dat team heeft in 2020 geen ruimte voor de 32-jarige: zij stelden Esteban Ocon aan als de nieuwe teamgenoot van Daniel Ricciardo. Daarna leek Hülkenberg kans te maken op een zitje bij Haas F1, dat echter de voorkeur gaf aan Romain Grosjean.

Met nog een handvol races te gaan in 2019 zit Hülkenberg daardoor nog altijd zonder zitje voor 2020. Een overgang naar Williams sluit hij uit, maar Alfa Romeo heeft ook nog een plekje vrij naast Kimi Raikkonen. Hülkenberg onthulde dat hij gesprekken voert met het team. "Absoluut. Het lijkt me vrij logisch dat ik met ze in gesprek ben, maar we zullen zien waar het toe leidt."

Hülkenberg blijft relaxed ondanks onzekerheid

Hülkenberg gaf tegenover CNN Sport aan dat hij graag al zekerheid had gehad over zijn plannen voor 2020, maar hij ontkent dat hij zich daar ongemakkelijk door voelt. "Ik had verwacht dat het allemaal wat sneller zou gaan, maar we zijn nu in Suzuka en we hebben nog altijd niet echt een antwoord."

"Het verandert je perspectief licht als je geen zekerheid over je toekomst hebt. Je kijkt iets anders naar dingen en misschien waardeer je ze meer. De situatie is zoals deze is. Ik voel me niet ongemakkelijk, moet ik toegeven. Op een bepaalde manier voel ik me goed en relaxed. Ik heb gedaan wat ik kon doen. Als het niet zo mag zijn, dan is het zo. Je kan dingen niet forceren."

Ik zou het hem gunnen maar iets in mij zegt dat Ferrari daar een te grote vinger in de pap heeft en Hulk dus niet naar Alfa Romeo gaat.

Volgend jaar zit hij in de Alfa en het jaar daarop is hij 2e man bij Ferrari.

Dat is geen feit maar mijn bescheiden mening.

  Ik help het je hopen want ik ben wel een fan van de Hulk. Maar als realist vrees ik er voor. Wellicht zien we hem komende seizoen(en) nog in de Alfa, maar een promotie naar een topteam geloof ik niet meer in.

  Ik heb eerder ook al eens aangegeven dat hij komend seizoen zomaar eens de tweede coureur bij Ferrari zou kunnen zijn. Wellicht is 2021 een betere kans voor hem. Maar als er een clausule is van Philip Morris dat er altijd een wereldkampioen in het team moet rijden, kan Hülkenberg er alleen komen in 2021 als Leclerc wereldkampioen wordt met Ferrari. Anders moet Ferrari een andere (oud-)kampioen binnenhalen. Dat kan door Hamilton bij Mercedes los te weken, Fernando Alonso terug te halen naar de F1 of zelfs door Nico Rosberg dat stoeltje aan te bieden. Of Raikkonen terughalen natuurlijk. Maar feit is dat alle nog rijdende wereldkampioenen aardig op leeftijd zijn en Ferrari een probleem heeft om die eis in te vullen.
  Dus zie ik ze wel genoodzaakt om die eis los te laten, simpelweg omdat er geen beschikbare alternatieven zijn. En dan komt een ervaren coureur als Hülkenberg wel in beeld

  Nee, tenzij Ferrari een Bottas in hem ziet. Dan zou hij een jaar naar Alfa kunnen en daarna als een Bottas naast Leclerc kunnen. Maar ik geef meteen toe, de kans lijkt me niet groot.

  @Cherokee: Ik geloof wel degelijk in die theorie. Het talent voor de toekomst hebben ze met Charles. GIO in 2021 naast LEC Zie ik niet zitten. Beter dan LEC zal GIO niet worden en dan kan Ferrari beter kiezen voor een ervaren coureur naast LEC vanaf 2021.

Zie hem in 2021 wel voor Alfa rijden als opvolger voor Kimi. Misschien een tussen jaar als reserve of ontwikkelingscoureur bij Ferrari met een Indi of WEC uitstapje hier en daar.
