Kwalificatie: Pole voor Sebastian Vettel in Japan, Max Verstappen vijfde

Sebastian Vettel heeft zich verzekerd van de pole position voor de Grand Prix van Japan. De Ferrari-coureur was op een zonnig en droog Suzuka teamgenoot Charles Leclerc en Valtteri Bottas voor. Max Verstappen noteerde de vijfde tijd.

Q1 – Kubica en Magnussen crashen, Ricciardo al klaar

Het verloop van de eerste kwalificatiesessie op Suzuka was rommelig. De sessie was net twee minuten bezig toen Robert Kubica bij het opkomen van start-finish wijd ging en daardoor in de bandenstapels belandde. Zijn kwalificatie zat er dan ook al snel op, iets wat ook gold voor Kevin Magnussen. De Haas F1-coureur spinde in de laatste bocht en gleed vervolgens met de voor en achterkant tegen de bandenstapels aan. Beide incidenten veroorzaakten losstaande rode vlaggen.

In de resterende elf minuten draaide het voor de overgebleven coureurs om plaatsing voor Q2. Leclerc deed dat het beste in Q1, want hij reed de snelste tijd van de sessie. Hij werd op twee tienden gevolgd door Hamilton, Verstappen, Lando Norris, Valtteri Bottas en Sebastian Vettel. Daniel RIcciardo, Sergio Perez en George Russell waren niet snel genoeg om door te gaan, waardoor zij samen met Magnussen en Kubica afvallen.

Q2 – Mercedes neemt koppositie over

Het tweede deel van de kwalificatie verliep een stuk minder tumultueus. In tegenstelling tot Q1 waren er geen crashes te noteren in dit deel, waarbij de snelste tien coureurs zich plaatsten voor het beslissende deel van de kwalificatie. Antonio Giovinazzi, Lance Stroll, Kimi Raikkonen, Daniil Kvyat en Nico Hülkenberg maakten dat niet mee: zij waren niet snel genoeg om zich te plaatsen voor Q3.

Wel snel genoeg voor een plekje in de top tien was Bottas. De Mercedes-coureur reed een 1:27.688, waarmee hij ruim een tiende sneller was dan teamgenoot Hamilton. Alexander Albon sloot in zijn tweede run aan op P3, voor Vettel, Leclerc en Verstappen op de zesde positie.

Q3 - Vettel pakt tweede pole van 2019

In de afgelopen negen wedstrijden was teamgenoot Charles Leclerc hem altijd de baas geweest in de kwalificatie, maar in Japan sloeg Vettel terug. De Ferrari-coureur reed al in zijn eerste run de snelste tijd, om die vervolgens in zijn tweede run te verbeteren naar een 1:27.064. Daarmee was de viervoudig wereldkampioen een kleine twee tienden sneller dan Leclerc.

Kort daarachter, op ruim twee tienden van Vettel, legde Bottas beslag op de derde startplek. Hij was teamgenoot Hamilton met negen duizendsten te snel af. Daarachter viel een gat van een halve seconde naar Verstappen, die geen vuist kon maken in Q3. Albon sloot aan op de zesde positie, voor het McLaren-duo Carlos Sainz en Lando Norris. Fransmannen Pierre Gasly en Romain Grosjean sloten de top 10 af.

  Nee hoor; dat Max inde eerste ronde er half uit geramd wordt kan helaas gebeuren. En hier heeft mijn gebrek aan voorliefde voor onze Spaanse paellavreter niets mee te maken...Dat Mercedes ophoud met de verdere ontwikkeling van de motor heet kennis!

  Dat zit er dik in dat het volgend jaar niks wordt voor Max, tenzij RBR en FER een ruil maken tussen VET en VER...persoonlijk denk ik dat het beter is voor Max om naar FER te gaan...nergens gefrustreerd over!
