Formule 1 bereikt principe-akkoord met Hard Rock Stadium voor GP in Miami

De Formule 1 is een stap dichterbij een Grand Prix in Miami. Volgens de Miami Herald heeft de Formule 1 een principe-akkoord gesloten met het Hard Rock Stadium voor de organisatie van een tweede race in de Verenigde Staten.

Het Hard Rock Stadium is de thuisbasis van American Football-club Miami Dolphins, dat uitkomt in de NFL, maar zal dus ook de thuishaven worden van de Grand Prix van Miami. Dat blijkt uit een statement dat commercieel directeur Sean Bratches van de F1 en vice-voorzitter en CEO Tom Garfinkel van Hard Rock Stadium naar buiten gebracht hebben op maandagavond.

In het statement verklaren Bratches en Garfinkel dat uitgelaten zijn dat ze de overeenkomst kunnen aankondigen. Er lijkt ook al een datum geprikt te zijn voor de race: in mei 2021 moet de Formule 1 voor het eerst naar Miami afreizen voor de Grand Prix, die op een stratencircuit rond het Hard Rock Stadium verreden zal gaan worden.

"We zijn meer dan blij dat we kunnen aankondigen dat de Formule 1 en Hard Rock Stadium een principe-akkoord bereikt hebben om de eerste Formula One Miami Grand Prix rond het Hard Rock Stadium te organiseren. Met een verwachte jaarlijkse impact van meer dan 400 miljoen dollar en 35.000 hotelovernachtingen zal de Grand Prix van Miami jaarlijks een enorme economische boost vormen voor Zuid-Florida."

"We zijn onze fans, gekozen officials en de lokale toeristische industrie enorm dankbaar voor hun geduld en steun gedurende dit proces. We kijken ernaar uit om het grootste racespektakel ter wereld voor het eerst naar een van de meest iconische en glamoureuze regio's ter wereld te brengen", staat in het statement van Bratches en Garfinkel.

Voor Liberty Media lijkt met het principe-akkoord een lang gekoesterde wens uit te komen. Al sinds het de commerciële rechten van de Formule 1 eind 2016 kocht van Bernie Ecclestone en CVC Capital Partners aasde het bedrijf op een race in Miami. In eerste instantie zou de race verreden gaan worden nabij de AmericanAirlines Arena in de binnenstad, maar dat stuitte op protesten van bewoners.

Dat wordt druk in mei over twee jaar. Of de kalender wordt helemaal omgegooid, of ze verwachten dat Zandvoort niet door gaat.

Op twitter.com/f1miami staan tekeningen en een lay-out van het circuit. Volgens de telegraaf gaat een miljardair er geld in stoppen om het te realiseren.

Maar kennelijk hebben ze daar geen last van stikstof :-)

  Als je de kaart rond het stadion erbij pakt, zie je dat de wegen er (grotendeels) al liggen. Het is/wordt dus inderdaad een stratencircuit.
  De layout zelf vind ik dan weer een stuk minder spannend.
  Ik ga er vanuit dat er rechtsom gereden wordt en dat start/finish dan naast het stadium zelf komt, waar het pitgebouw dan tegenover komt te staan.
  Dan heb je dus de start, een hairpin, een recht stuk, 3 haakse bochten, weer een lang (bijna) recht stuk (dat ieder geval wel gewoon vol gas is), dan 5 bochten die elkaar leuk opvolgen waar het dus ietsjes technischer is, linker doordraaier en dan eindigen met een hairpin weer naar start/finish.

  Hmm, ze rijden dus linksom (tegen de klok in) zie ik nu op wat andere foto's.
  Start/finish is inderdaad wel naast het stadium.
  Dan kom je dus de finishlijn over na een hairpin en een S-bocht.
