Kimi Raikkonen wordt eerste veertiger in Formule 1 sinds Michael Schumacher

Kimi Raikkonen viert vandaag zijn verjaardag. De coureur van Alfa Romeo blaast vandaag 40 kaarsjes uit en wordt volgende week in Mexico de eerste veertiger in de Formule 1 sinds Michael Schumacher in 2012.

Naast de meest ervaren coureur is Raikkonen dus ook de oudste coureur op de grid van 2019 en vanaf vandaag mag hij zich dus tot de club van veertigers rekenen. Daarmee is de Fin met ruime afstand de oudste op de grid: nummers 2 en 3 zijn Robert Kubica en Lewis Hamilton, die op dit moment allebei 34 jaar oud zijn. Hoewel hij dus de nestor van het huidige veld is, komt Raikkonen niet in de buurt van het record voor oudste F1-coureur ooit.

Dat record staat op naam van Louis Chiron. Hij was tijdens de Grand Prix van Monaco in 1955 met 55 jaar, 9 maanden en 18 dagen de oudste coureur die ooit in een Formule 1-Grand Prix van start ging. De beginjaren van de Formule 1 was hoe dan ook het domein van de oudere coureurs: de tien oudste coureurs ooit op de grid van een F1-race waren allemaal boven de 50 jaar oud en reden allemaal voor 1956 hun laatste race.

Raikkonen achtste 40-jarige ex-kampioen in F1

Raikkonen wordt wel een van de acht wereldkampioenen die na hun 40ste verjaardag deelnemen aan een Grand Prix. De laatste hiervoor was dus Michael Schumacher, die zijn carrière op 43-jarige leeftijd afsloot tijdens de Grand Prix van Brazilië in 2012. Daarvoor was Nigel Mansell de laatste: hij reed in 1995 op 41-jarige leeftijd zijn laatste Grand Prix in Spanje.

Vooralsnog zal Raikkonen nog wel even in de Formule 1 actief blijven. Eind 2018 tekende de Fin een tweejarig contract bij Alfa Romeo, waardoor hij ook in 2020 bij het team actief zal zijn. Hij zal dan het recordaantal voor meeste Grand Prix-starts overnemen van Rubens Barrichello. Tevens sluit Raikkonen niet uit dat hij na 2020 nog actief blijft in de Formule 1

  Inderdaad. Ik lees net op de ORF (Oostenrijk) dat Kimi - volgens de door hem geautoriseerde biografie "De onbekende Kimi" - in het seizoen 2012 bijna continu dronken zijn geweest tussen de Grands Prix van Bahrein en Spanje ... :D
