Wehrlein 'heeft het naar zijn zin' in Formule E, maar staat open voor F1 en Campos

Het Spaanse Campos wil met steun van Monegaskische investeerders in 2021 de Formule 1 betreden. Pascal Wehrlein werd genoemd als een van de beoogde coureurs en de Duitser lijkt open te staan voor zo'n avontuur.

Wehrlein zal komende maand beginnen aan zijn tweede volledige seizoen in de Formule E, de klasse waar hij vorig jaar in debuteerde. In 2016 en 2017 reed de Duitser nog in de Formule 1 voor achtereenvolgens Manor en Sauber. Met ingang van 2018 moest hij bij het laatste team echter plaatsmaken voor Charles Leclerc, waarna hij als simulatorcoureur actief werd bij Mercedes en nu Ferrari.

Vanaf 2021 is er mogelijk een nieuwe mogelijkheid voor Wehrlein om in de Formule 1 te gaan rijden. Campos, dat al in de Formule 2 en Formule 3 actief is, wil met steun van Monaco Increase Management de Formule 1 betreden in 2021. Wehrlein geldt als een van de kandidaten voor een zitje, te meer omdat het Monegaskische bedrijf zijn management is.

"Natuurlijk ken ik Adrian Campos - hij was lang onderdeel van Mahindra", zei Wehrlein tegenover Autosport over de vermeende interesse. "Op die manier ken ik hem. De gasten uit Monaco zijn mijn management, dus ik ben het meest close met hen. Ik weet echter niet wat er gaat gebeuren in 2020, dus we zullen zien. Ik sta open voor alles - dus als de kans er zou zijn en het zou een goede kans zijn, dan sta ik er zeker open voor."

'Nog niet bezig met 2021'

"Ik denk nog niet aan 2021. We zijn nog niet eens aan het seizoen 2020 begonnen, dus daar focus ik me op. Daarna zien we het wel. Ik ben echter ook blij in de Formule E. Ik wil competitief zijn en kunnen vechten om de leidende posities. Dat is een grote prioriteit. Ik had twee goede jaren in de Formule 1 - het was leuk, maar uiteindelijk voelde het niet hetzelfde als het winnen van een race."

"Mijn beste resultaat was P8 - hoewel dat een grote prestatie was, of zelfs de P10 met Manor - geeft het je niet dezelfde emoties als het winnen van een race. Ik moet dus zien wat mijn prioriteit krijgt, maar nu is het nog te vroeg. Ik sta er echter wel open voor."

Anywho, geen team die Wehrlein nog wilt. Te lang uit de running. Zelfs Haas heeft nog liever een zeikende knoflook vreter in de auto dan Wehrlein.

  Lijkt op HAM? Hij is inderdaad ook donker...
  
  Verder verdient Wehrlein m.i. wèl een tweede kans. Heeft het altijd goed gedaan en dat argument over het uit de running geweest zijn van Steiner lijkt me onzin. Zeker met deze toegankelijke auto's naar vroeger ook al.

  Ik geloof ook niet dat Wehrlein nog ergens kans maakt, te lang uitgelegen, buiten zijn schuld om overigens want hij heeft het verdienstelijk gedaan in de jaren dat hij reed

  Eens Clem. Wehrlein kan een prima potje sturen. Maar helaas te lang er uit om aanspraak te maken op een goed zitje.

Mocht het allemaal van de grond komen dan kon meneer Wehrlein wel eens een hele grote kans maken om deze bolide de sporen te geven. Dichter bij het voor dan hij nu zit kun je op dit moment niet komen lijkt me.
