Honda verwacht 'zeker geen makkelijk weekend' in Mexico

Honda keert in Mexico terug op de plek waar het haar eerste Grand Prix als constructeur wist te winnen. De motorleverancier en technisch directeur Toyoharu Tanabe weten dat een herhaling van de winst komend weekend lastig gaat worden.

De Mexicaanse Grand Prix van 1965 was een prooi voor Honda. Het fabrieksteam kwam met Richie Ginther als eerste over de finish op het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, dat ook doen al de plaats van handeling was voor de Mexicaanse Formule 1-race. Het was destijds ook de eerste overwinning die Honda als constructeur in de Formule 1 wist te pakken. Vandaag is dat precies 54 jaar geleden.

Dit weekend hoopt Honda op een herhaling van dat succes als motorleverancier van Red Bull Racing. Tanabe beseft echter heel goed dat het lastig wordt om de race te winnen, zeker gezien de vorm van Ferrari en Mercedes. "We hebben in de laatste races een duidelijke verbetering gezien in de prestaties van een aantal van onze concurrenten. Daarom verwachten we niet dat dit een makkelijk weekend voor ons wordt."

Mexicaanse Grand Prix 'lastig' door hoogte

Tanabe benadrukt in zijn voorbeschouwing op de website van Honda dat de race in Mexico een aparte is. Er wordt op hoogte gereden en dat zorgt voor een aantal 'interessante' vraagstukken voor team en motorleverancier. "Het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez zorgt voor interessante vraagstukken voor zowel engineers van het chassis als de power unit. De meeste daarvan zijn gelinkt aan het feit dat Mexico-Stad 2,3 kilometer boven de zeespiegel ligt."

"De lage dichtheid van de lucht zorgt ervoor dat de turbine van de krachtbron harder moet werken om hetzelfde vermogen te leveren als op andere circuits. Het feit dat de lucht dunner is, betekent ook dat het koelen van auto-onderdelen en de motor minder effectief is en het heeft ook invloed op de efficiëntie van de aerodynamica. Daarom rijden de auto's in een configuratie met veel downforce."

als je hier niet mee gaat doen dan zou ik die wagen de prullenbak ingooien en gewoon alles op volgend jaar zetten. Maar dan ook echt alles. Alleen de kwali en de race nog maar gaan rijden de rest van het jaar. Dan moet er gewoon een heel nieuw concept staan volgend jaar.

maar ze gaan wel meedoen, Dus wees gerust. Pole en de winst is het doel.

  We hebben in Oostenrijk gezien dat Honda best aardig gaat op hoogte en dat de RB15 best aardig met zijn banden om ging. Beide zijn in Mexico zeer belangrijk.
  Ik zie het helemaal niet zo somber in.

  Ik ben ook optimistisch gestemd maar dat ben ik over het algemeen wel behalve als het woord Zandvoort op de radar komt. Hoe dan ook, het wordt een lange sportzondag en ik moet nog wel een oppas voor mijn vrouw regelen.

  Klopt Meister, maar de RB ring is wel een van de hoogste liggingen qua kalender. Volgens mij is alleen Sao Paulo hoger en Mexico stad.

  Het is ook altijd hetzelfde liedje met Renault. Het is overduidelijk dat RB-Renault het niks niet beter had gedaan, dan wel minder door de chaos die daar is. Dan maar structuur en een half miljard achter je in de hoop dat het ooit op zn plek valt.
  Je hebt gewoon een Ferrari of Mercedes motor dit jaar nodig voor titels. Wie weet dat volgend jaar Honda close komt qua motor maar het is een zekerheid dat Renault geen enkel idee heeft hoe ze in de buurt komen. #McLaren's kritiek en besluit

Honda is nog steeds bang voor ploffende motoren en daardoor bang voor imagoschade.
Maar hebben niet ook gewoon imagoschade door gewoon langzaam te zijn?

Ik verwacht een rampzalig weekend voor RedBull vergeleken met de laatste jaren daar.
Ik denk zelfs dat een podium er niet in zit

  Een podium zit er op elke baan wel in voor RB (Verstappen) mits hij bij de eerste 5 start. Dat heeft de laatste 3 jaar wel bewezen. Ik zie het wel goed komen. Ze hebben een frisse motor itt Ferrari en Mercedes. Die het maar vertikken een straf te pakken. dus dat ding kan waarschijnlijk weer op standje 11. Mits hij heel blijft denk ik dat hij hem wint.
