ExxonMobil miste bijna deadline voor brandstofupdate Red Bull voor Suzuka

Red Bull Racing mocht zich in Japan verheugen op een nieuwe brandstof van ExxonMobil. Volgens global motorsport technology manager David Tsurusaki scheelde het echter weinig of de update was niet op tijd gereed geweest.

Sinds de zomerstop heeft Red Bull het lastig. De regelmatige podiumplaatsen uit de eerste seizoenshelft worden niet meer behaald: alleen in Singapore stond Max Verstappen door een sterke strategie op het podium. De achterstand op Mercedes en met name Ferrari lijkt flink gegroeid ten opzichte van voor het zomerreces: in de eerste seizoenshelft waren Red Bull en Ferrari aan elkaar gewaagd, na de zomer is dat niet het geval.

Red Bull werkt met man en macht aan een ommekeer, om zodoende weer echt mee te doen om de podiumplaatsen. Hoewel dat in Japan niet echt lukte, kreeg het daar wel een steuntje in de rug van brandstofleverancier ExxonMobil. Tsurusaki gaf tegenover Crash.net echter toe dat de deadline echter bijna gemist werd. "Aan dit project werd al een tijdje gewerkt, en eerlijk gezegd was er een periode waarin we dachten dat we de deadline niet zouden halen."

"Als je de brandstof verandert, moet je natuurlijk veel testen en ontwikkelingswerk doen. Aanvankelijk deden we dat met een enkele cilinder, daarna doe je een volledige betrouwbaarheidstest, waarna je het moet produceren en moet verschepen vanuit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Dat moest op verhoogde snelheid. Er moet in een zeer korte periode veel gebeuren."

Uiteindelijk was de brandstof dus toch op tijd gereed voor de race op Suzuka, maar echt vruchten kon Red Bull er niet van plukken. Verstappen was in de openingsfase van de race betrokken bij een botsing met Charles Leclerc en viel uiteindelijk uit. Alexander Albon redde vervolgens de eer van het team met de vierde plek. Dit weekend hoopt het team stiekem op een herhaling van de successen van 2017 en 2018, toen Verstappen won in Mexico.

@bschuit.......nog even over die post van gisteren.
Je hebt gelijk met dat buildup jaar, maar aan de andere kant verschillen de maten van Renault motor en de Honda motor natuurlijk niet zo vreselijk veel....dus het inpassen daarvan zie ik niet als een geldig excuus.
Het chassisprobleem is grotendeels mechanische grip en dat het weinig tot niets te doen met het inpassen van een andere motor.
Daarbij komt dat Honda een verbetering van 0,3 sec dmv de motor verzorgd heeft voor RB en als je dat meerekent bij de achterstand laat dat de RB fabriek er nog veel slechter uitzien.
Vandaar mijn gedachte dat ze daar tot wel ernstig de weg kwijt zijn.

Weer een leuk item voor seizoen 2 van 'Drive to Surive" van Netflix.. Bijna een deadline missen doet het altijd goed als onderdeel in dat soort sensatie series.. Voor de rest weinig bijzonders want er zal veel vaker wel iets maar net op tijd klaar zijn voor een raceweekend in de F1..
