Alexander Albon verklaart waarom hij moest wennen aan Red Bull RB15

Alexander Albon scoorde tijdens de vorige Grand Prix in Japan zijn beste resultaat in de Formule 1 tot nu toe met de vierde plek. Dat reflecteert volgens hem dat hij zich steeds meer op zijn gemak gaat voelen in de Red Bull RB15.

Inmiddels heeft Albon vijf races achter de rug bij Red Bull Racing, het team dat hij in de zomerstop kwam versterken. Tot dusver wist hij iedere race in de top 6 te eindigen en op Suzuka, het thuiscircuit van motorleverancier Honda, eindigde hij als vierde. Dat is het beste resultaat in de nog jonge F1-carrière van Albon, die in Australië namens Toro Rosso zijn debuut maakte.

Tijdens de persconferentie benadrukte Albon dat dit mogelijk is, omdat hij zich steeds meer op zijn gemak voelt in de RB15 van Red Bull. "Ik denk niet dat er voor Japan iets specifieks gebeurde, maar ik raak iedere keer meer op mijn gemak in de auto. Japan was daarnaast ook een geweldig circuit waar ik van hou, dus misschien dat ik er iets meer van genoot en dat het daardoor wat beter ging. Het was een goed weekend."

Albon meent dat die gewenningsperiode nodig is, omdat een coureur zijn rijstijl iets aanpast aan de auto die hij bestuurt. "Je moet de kleine trucjes van de auto leren. In de periode bij Toro Rosso ontwikkel je je rijstijl in de richting van wat de auto nodig heeft, maar je begint eigenlijk weer op nul zodra je van team verandert. Het kost wat tijd, maar dat is niet meer dan normaal zodra je van team of van auto wisselt."

Albon niet bezig met podiumplaats in Mexico

Inmiddels lijkt Albon langzaam maar zeker te aarden bij Red Bull Racing, dat in Mexico hoopt de successen van de afgelopen seizoenen te herhalen. In 2017 en 2018 wist Max Verstappen namelijk te winnen in Mexico-Stad. Verwacht Albon daardoor dit weekend een gooi te kunnen doen naar zijn eerste podiumplaats?

"We zullen het zien", stelt de Britse Thai. "Ik denk niet dat we zoals de afgelopen jaren de favoriet zijn. We hebben hier ons succes gehad, maar zoals altijd ziet Ferrari er sterk uit. We gaan het zien. Ik focus me op mezelf. Het zou mooi zijn om een podium te pakken, maar daar ben ik op dit moment nog niet echt mee bezig."

  Kijk Roy ....resultaten uit het verleden bieden geen garantie voor de toekomst. In dit geval gaat dit meer op voor RB (2018) dan voor Ferrari (2019)..........

  Die Ferrari sjouwt als een malle, en gaat na de zomerstop ook op bochtige secties als de Brandweer., dus zo gek is die opmerking van Albon niet imo. Lewis gaat voor de titel, en zal ook niet alle risico's van de wereld nemen tijdens de race.

  @losersmcWoking: Verbaast me niets eigenlijk. Albon zal via zijn moeder Muay Thai geleerd hebben en het enige wat Mad Max kon was dreigend grommen en schieten met een afgezaagd geweer, die kapotte knie in een brace zal ook niet meehelpen :D
