Williams: "Voorbarig om te zeggen dat Latifi in 2020 bij ons racet"

Williams heeft nog altijd een stoeltje te vergeven voor het seizoen 2020. Nicholas Latifi is de grootste kanshebber op dat zitje, maar volgens teambaas Claire Williams is het voorbarig om te stellen dat de keuze op de Canadees is gevallen.

Twee dingen staan vast qua coureurs bij Williams voor 2020: George Russell zal zijn zitje in ieder geval behouden, terwijl Robert Kubica hoe dan ook zal vertrekken bij het Britse team. Latifi, de huidige testcoureur van het team, is de grootste kanshebber op het stoeltje naast Russell, maar Williams wilde tegenover Sky Sports nog niet toegeven dat de keuze op hem is gevallen. Zij verwacht na de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi een bekendmaking.

"Dat is nog wat voorbarig, maar hij heeft dit jaar goed werk voor ons geleverd. We hebben voor 2020 ons tweede zitje nog vrij, maar we dubben er intern nog over. Zoals je verwacht zijn er veel dingen die meespelen in de overwegingen, maar we weten dat we na de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi in de positie zijn om onze coureurs te bevestigen."

Gebrek aan ervaring geen punt voor Williams

Mocht de keuze daadwerkelijk op Latifi vallen, dan zal Williams wederom met een onervaren line up aan de start staan. Dat was in 2018 en 2019 ook al het geval met Lance Stroll en Sergey Sirotkin en dit jaar dus Russell en Kubica, die na acht jaar afwezigheid terugkeerde in de sport. Dat gebrek aan ervaring is voor Williams geen probleem: ze hecht in de keuze voor coureurs meer waarde aan hun talent dan hun leeftijd.

"George is erg volwassen. Hij gedraagt zich eerder als een 35-jarige dan als een 21-jarige. Ik zou er eerlijk gezegd geen problemen mee hebben om twee jonge coureurs te hebben. Leeftijd is voor ons niet zo'n ding, maar het draait meer om het talent dat ze hebben. George, maar ook de andere rookies, hebben laten zien dat ze ondanks hun leeftijd veel talent hebben."

Hoorde gisteren dat Latifi nog meer geld achter zich had dan Stroll. Aankomende seizoenen dus weer genoeg geld bij Williams om reserveonderdelen te maken.

  Ik zie hier weer een Stroll scenario komen. Latifi rijdt 2 jaar bij Williams mee te doen en is dan zover dat hij naar de renstal van papa kan overschakelen.

  In de situatie van Williams kan je niet anders dan Latifi aannemen. Vanaf 2016 alleen maar slechte keuzes gemaakt en dus in geldnood. + punt van Latifi... op een goede dag is hij van acceptabel niveau. Met Russel hebben ze het talent en met Latifi het budget om de auto op de schop te gooien.

De afgelopen jaren racete er helemaal niemand bij Williams. Ze rijden alleen masr achteraan hun rondjes mee helaas.
Komend seizoen verwacht ik ook niet dat daar veel verandering in komt. Maar hopelijk heb ik het mis.

  Toch hoor ik tegenstrijdige verhalen vanuit Grove komen. In de media wordt veelal Latifi als een zekerheid bestempeld en mij is zelfs verteld dat er al een deal getekend is in Monza.
  Echter hoor ik dat er een groepje technici is die Hulkenberg liever zien komen. Ben benieuwd wat de waarheid is.
