Max Verstappen: "Zo terugkomen tijdens het weekend is fantastisch"

Een jaar na zijn misschien wel meest frustrerende kwalificatie uit zijn carrière, nam Max Verstappen op de enige juiste wijze wraak en pakte de Nederlander zijn tweede pole position van het seizoen. Hoewel de Red Bull gedurende het weekend niet snel genoeg leek om de Ferrari's te verslaan in de kwalificatie. Op de zaterdag lijkt het Oostenrijkse team echter iets gevonden te hebben in de afstelling dat het team weer aan de top bracht op het circuit waar ze de laatste twee jaren al wisten te winnen.

Verstappen was na de kwalificatie dan ook vooral tevreden over de extra snelheid die zijn team vond op zaterdag: "Het was een interessante dag en om dan aan het einde van de rit op pole te staan is natuurlijk geweldig. De Ferrari's leken de laatste drie races veel te snel op de rechte stukken om ze hier te kunnen verslaan. Maar om dan zo terug te komen tijdens het weekend en op pole te staan is fantastisch. Daar moet ik het team ook heel erg voor bedanken."

De Nederlander vervolgde zijn lofzang richting Red Bull Racing: "Ze bleven pushen en hebben voortdurend nieuwe onderdelen geïntroduceerd en vandaag zagen we dat dat effect sorteert. Ik hoopte stiekem het hele weekend dat we een auto hadden die snel genoeg zou zijn om voor pole position te strijden, maar het was lastig om de balans in de auto te vinden. In Q3 kwam echter alles samen."

Er hangt echter nog een klein vraagteken boven de pole position van Verstappen. De Nederlander reed namelijk zijn snelste tijd terwijl Bottas hard gecrasht was in de Peraltada bocht. Op het moment van schrijven is het nog onbekend of de FIA een onderzoek instelt naar of de Nederlander wel genoeg vaart minderde tijdens zijn laatste snelle ronde.

Heerlijk maar het is al tijden een rbr circuit dus dat gemompel van die ziggo lui van ze zitten op de goede weg is puur opportunisme.
