Williams geen optie voor Nico Hülkenberg: "Zie mezelf wel bij Alfa racen"

Nico Hülkenberg sluit een terugkeer naar Williams in 2020 uit. De Duitser vindt het daarvoor niet het juiste moment. Wel ziet hij zichzelf volgend seizoen voor Alfa Romeo racen.

Het is nog altijd onzeker waar de toekomst van Hülkenberg ligt. Aan het eind van het lopende seizoen moet hij na drie seizoenen vertrekken bij Renault. Het Franse team gaf de voorkeur aan de jonge Esteban Ocon als teamgenoot van Daniel Ricciardo. Omdat de meeste zitjes voor 2020 al bezet zijn, is het hoogst onzeker of Hülkenberg komend seizoen wel in de Formule 1 te bewonderen is.

Een van zijn kansen ligt bij Williams, dat nog een teamgenoot moet kiezen voor George Russell. Hülkenberg sloot na een vraag van GPToday.net echter uit dat hij die teamgenoot wordt. “Ik denk dat zij iemand anders nodig hebben. Ik denk dat ik op dit moment, waar ik nu sta in mijn carrière en waar zij zijn, niet de juiste persoon ben. Qua timing is het gewoon niet goed. Met alle respect voor het team zie ik het niet gebeuren.”

De enige andere kans op een racezitje in de Formule 1 ligt bij Alfa Romeo. Kimi Raikkonen is al bevestigd voor 2020, maar de identiteit van zijn teamgenoot is nog onbekend. Hülkenberg heeft daar wel oren naar en stelt dat hij in gesprek geweest is met het Italiaanse team. “Daar zie ik mezelf wel rijden." Wat echter geen optie is, is een jaar aan de zijlijn toekijken als test- en reservecoureur.

“Misschien race ik wel liever een heel jaar niet. Op dit moment weet ik het gewoon niet. Het hangt af van wat hier gebeurt en hoe het zich ontvouwt. Zodra ik dat antwoord heb, zal ik kijken naar andere dingen. Zoals ik eerder al gezegd heb, wil ik niet gehaast ergens in springen om maar te racen. Het moet iets zijn wat ik leuk vind, een uitdaging, iets wat spanning bij mij oproept. Daarop heb ik nog geen perfect antwoord.”

  Hij moet wel gek zijn om op dit tijdstip in zijn carrière geld te gaan betalen voor het feit dat hij volgend seizoen steevast achteraan mag rijden. Dan zou ik nog liever stoppen. Hoop dat hij bij Alfa kan komen.

  Wel aardige coureur en zeker een waarde voor het middenveld maar ik wordt er niet rauwig om wanneer ik hem zie vertrekken. Wel vind ik het jammer dat hij plaats moet maken voor een mindere coureur als latifi (gewoon in het geheel genomen qua rijders op de grid)

  Je papegaaid goed, Messi! Lekker belangrijk dat hij Nederlands spreekt. Ik overhype hem niet. Vind hem net zo saai, als Bottas. Rb heeft een ervaren tweede coureur nodig die punten pakt. Heb jij een betere ervaren optie, die geen herrie schopt?

  Hulkenberg verslaat Ricciardo regelmatig in de kwali...vind ik niet slecht.
  RB zal hem niet halen maar hij hoort zeker nog in F1 thuis.

Ik denk dat Alfa Romeo hem echt een kans moet geven, die GIO is nu ook niet echt een topper en denk dat ze met HUL een sterke rijder hebben.
Hij is geslachtofferd voor Ocon en ben benieuwd of ze daar geen spijt van krijgen.
